Are there any experiences out there with a Commando or Commando size bike on a hitch carrier over long distances? I have a Ford Explorer with a standard 2 inch hitch and pretty well built carrier. The carrier is homemade, strong, but a little on the heavy side. I have hauled my Commando short distances (under 100 miles round trip) with no problem but now I want to go to the INOA Rally in Colorado and that is 1000 miles one way. I believe the hitch is rated for 500 lbs. and bike and hitch probably weigh 530. I know a hitch can stand well over its rated amount but still being kind up there in weight, I thought I would see if anyone had any experiences of this sort.

You'd better remove your chain. You are also likely to need a new rear tire much sooner than otherwise.

I like using a trailer MUCH better.

Thanks GrandPaul but the type carrier that I am using is the type that has the entire bike carried on a piece of channel and it rides perpendicular to the hauling vehicle. Thereby my dilemma is the full weight of the Commando and the carrier on the hitch.

Ah, so.

530 is no big deal. The ratings are always conservative for liability reasons.
