I used the original steel screws, washers, and nuts. They use two small steel washers, with one under the nut inside the fairing, and one under the head of the screw, followed by a rubber washer against the windscreen, on the outside. Worked fine for years. On the other hand, I've used the plastic screws and nuts on other bikes, and they worked just as well. The key to any of them is to not over tighten them and crack the windscreen. My PR originally also had a strip of black electrical tape around the fairing, between it and the windscreen. It's shown in this ad. Interesting that they didn't show one on the F750 bike.
These are the screws that came with my Normal fairing. Or one's just like them. They were metric and I can't remember if I couldn't stomach metric on my bike and changed them out.
There's an o-ring under the washer. On the backside is just a plain washer and nut. I like this setup as you have rubber up against the windscreen.
The well nuts shown in the above posts also work well. I've also seen plastic screws and nuts used.
I also originally didn't have the black tape between the windscreen and the fairing. I thought it would look better without. Which is true as long as you don't use the bike. It will rub and leave marks on the fairing if you don't put something there.
if you use plastic screws, you might break the screws before the screen splits when you drop the bike. Whatever you do, DO NOT paint the fairing - that turns uncertainty into certainty.
The flange of the well nut sits between the screen and the fairing as a buffer, the body expands/pulls against the inside of the screen as the screw is drawn tight from the outside
