I was watching this item and was planning to put on a bid ~ as it kicked off at $22 AUD.

I was concerned it was described as an Australian made product but selling out of The Phillipines !

But one of our Triples Down Under group, a (Professional ) bike restorer in Melbourne, confirmed that he has dealt with the bloke and he is a very talented tradesman !

Very nice !

The lack of side cover mounts concerned me at first ; but would make for a very nice special custom bike ~ perhaps he will offer the mounts on later versions ~

He is on here regularly, I have several parts from him and they look great. If I was running that I would not want it hidden under a sidecover!

Exactly , kind of defeats the purpose , covering it up with a side cover, in future I may offer it with a matching alloy side cover for the left side, the buyer of the sold tank has already requested this.
it will all happen when time allows. I'm a bit flat out,
Australian living in the Philippines .

Well done !

A very nice product ~ as suggested ~ I bet you are run off your &*&^*(&^(

Thanks for adding in your comments ~

I spend a lot of time building wheels for Cafe Racers, I manufacture exact replica Norton 2ls front brakes as well as TZ Yamaha 260mm 4ls front brakes some of which I set up for Norton forks, very popular with the Featherbed set, same era.
finding time to do the alloy gas tanks and side covers etc is hard , so much for my retirement on a pacific island.
this alloy Interstate tank and side covers going on my current build.

Another NICE Aussie product

I bought some Dunstall rearsets from Madass for a street cafe racer I am putting together, they were excellent quality, I was very happy.

I have a tank, sidecovers, rearsets, finned rocker covers now, and a rear brake plate on the way. Really nice stuff and a stand up guy to deal with. I'm sure there will be more to purchase from him.

Bryan do you have an Al fork brace yet? If not think about it as Roadholders twist and rebound even if their internals upgraded to perfection. There are a bunch of all Al Cdo's out there and all look like vintage UFO's which is a good thing to me. Al oil tank should be a bit lighter and cools better if this matters but would be neater cooler if didn't need a cover to refine the visual lines. P11's had oil tank filling the frame w/o a covering.

Lovely looking work, but it looks like you could couldn't mount a cover over it , even if you wanted to--no recessed threads on top for the two securing bolts?

thats correct I purposely omitted the facility to mount a side cover, would you fit a painted black fiberglass cover over the alloy tank?

Love the polished alloy look, yes I can see some Commando takers for the complete deal,
I.E. oil tank, battery side cover and wait for it, Roadster tank in alloy. Can't wait if this kit becomes available?

Cheers Richard

I like the sound of that too. +1

Not many real craftsmen left in the world. Fabulous work. Is it too rude to ask on the forum how much an Interstate tank like that costs, or should I PM you?

I dont have a stock of tanks, it would be impossible to manufacture enough to have available stock sitting on the shelf, none of the tank suppliers can do that, some waiting lists are more than a year , I dont take orders , I dont like the pressure, when i get around to tanks and most other parts , I list them on Ebay, tank and side covers usually sell for $1200 to $1500, if you think thats a lot of money, I welcome anyone to produce same and tell me how long it took to make,
from the manufacturers point of view they are not a good money earner,
my next tanks will be like the Cafe Racer tank Brent has and also the Dunstall/Norvil tank. maybe some alloy roadster or Interstate tanks after that .

I was on a waiting list for a fuel tank for my Rickman, just over a year, been waiting for another, just under a year and counting.....guy is also retired and works at own pace, can't blame him can you, he is in soggy UK and some days does not want to go to a damp workshop! :D

madass,

I was wondering what grade aluminum you use + what gauge/thickness?

Awesome work there!

Cheers,

Steve

Nothing wrong with the price. Very acceptable for that sort of quality. Keep up the good work.

Steve,
Just chiming in here......, I dont make tanks like this or anything, but I do fabricate in aluminum. When I make a braket or somthing of the sort and it has complex curves or sharp bends in thick material...I usually start with 2024-0 Al...thickness is determined after what part is being used for...Then I bend up the part..then heat treat to T3 temper. generally this works great in most situations for bracketry and/or decorative parts I make. Just fyi

Of course you need access to a Salt bath tank at 1800 degrees.

normally what I do is I calculate how much and what shape material I need for a specific job, then i buy a few cases of cans of may favourite beverage, I take them to the beach on the tricycle and start drinking until I figure I have enough cans to melt down for the specific job, the local kids come around and we light a fire with coconut husks and start melting the cans, , I get the kids to make some molds in the sand , different shapes to what i think I need, we then cast the different shapes, after consuming the remaining stock waiting for the casts to cool down , I get the kids to start hammering the pieces on a big rock to form an even thickness, then its off home to start my handywork (the next day of course)
I think beer can material is tops.

this is another item I started producing this year, for early Commando's, I've sold about 100 or so of these, exact replica with cast Stainless highly polished levers and stiffening kit fitted. lots of beer cans in this.
Another NICE Aussie product
