I've had another look at Matts' photo and still can't see any exit hole. Not saying that yours doesn't have one, just the one in Matts' photo. John Tickle after market stuff certainly had (has?) a much better reputation than just about all the other junk available, most of which is, in my opinion, suitable only for landfill.

wilkey113 thanks for the photos, it all becomes clear now, and now knowing what I'm looking at, the slight rise/air exit is visible in Matts original photo. So thanks again.

can I ask was it the Single leading shoe, or 2ls, with air scoop :?:

'course you can Bernhard, it was the 8" SLS, but it did have an airscoop, and air exit holes, installed by the previous owner. As I've said it was an excellent brake, just so long as it didn't get hot. Then it became ballast.

The best of luck to Acebars, lets see some 'photos when it's complete

It seems to me that you might have had ordinary standard brake linings flitted. Yes these will fade.
I had Joe Dunphy fit the “green” racing linings which too be honest with you hardly ever gave me anything more than a slight fade ridden/raced solo-but they were vicious when cold and could bite back hard to a rider who forgot to get them fully warmed up first before giving it hard use.

Some great reading here, like the way the thread has evolved!

Acebars, best of luck with you special. Please keep us all posted as to what you end up going with, and how it performs. Always good to get feedback from someone that uses a specific brake / set up, and what they think of it.

I certainly will but I will just mention it seems to take me forever to do project, I am in the process of finishing a CB500t and that's taken me 2 years so far! It looks like my Special project has evolved to include a mix of Yamaha, Suzuki, Triumph, AJS and Norton now depending on what parts I get in, I do apologise in advance to the purists but it will look and ride beautifully I promise!

Acebars, I'm not a purist but I try to avoid using British parts on Japanese bikes and vice versa . The British parts are too rare and valuable - and Japanese parts on British bikes usually look really bad. If you look at that photo to the right of this post, you can see a Suzuki disc on the front, and the rear master cylinder and caliper are Japanese . The clutch lever is Tomaselli to match the brake lever - should be Dougherty, the master cylinder is Lockheed as is the caliper. My tacho is off an RG500, and I can't get it apart to paint out the 'S'. My biggest fight is with the fasteners, when you work on my bike you need two sets of spanners . I think that even if you bought a genuine ex- Joe Dunphy Seeley Commando 750, these days it would have a mix of parts. Once the authenticity is gone , it is difficult to get it back. My own bike never really existed in the old days, it just looks good but it is very frustrating.
This is what a Seeley Commando should look like :

I agree and would add that Japanese bikes in general look bad! Whereas as stock brit bikes are beauty incarnate! :D

Although I'm not a purist I cannot stand people who make choppers and bobbers out of old bikes, makes my blood boil.

I feel the same way about choppers and bobbers . To me, it is a sign of a rat bag. I wish they would fine something else to butcher - perhaps convert a few sports cars to pick-up trucks instead ?

It is the move away from functionality which makes road bikes look bad - the decorative bullshit.

You mean things like comfortable seats, and handlebars that don't make your shoulders ache.
Says he who never rides road bikes... ?

Buy yourself a Cadillac. I wonder how the resale value of 'bathtub' Triumphs compares with other 50s bikes ? They were trying to be motor scooters.

I think a bathtub 350 with modern 17 inch motard spoke wheels (160 rear / 120 front) would look great.
Perhaps I am alone in,some people do not like British bikes at all and knock them,I am the opposite, dig the bikes but do not have much time for the owners of said Brit bikes based on the last 35 years of dealing with the bodergy done to them and having to fix it !
Idiots with vice grips, hammers and other incorrect tools, engines dripping with all manner of sealant (Stag probably  )
I'm not sure who the main offenders were,Triumph or Norton owners.
No wonder of the 55000 ? Commando's built most went to the graveyard due to owner incompetence.
The reality was, they were more simplistic complex than Japanese bikes.

Was that a bit harsh.

Edit.
I forgot to add,I think Manx Nortons are overrated,a Commando is a far better motorcycle even with its quirks.

Yes precisely, Japanese motorcycles catered for the new market of big girls! :D

Plenty of old Jap bikes in the same if not worse condition, my CB500T was literally cement glued together moronic PO even cemented points covers etc. extremely difficult to get off without damaging the castings.

The only sealant I ever use is between where the crankcases split, and I understand this is correct, sometimes in different places if only really necessary (i.e. leaking oil).

The Jap racers do look nice, but only because they adopt something of an Avon fairing or look alike covering their ugly internals..

Well I can make out a ridiculous seat and high bars, but other than that the image is too small...

Finally made up my mind to fork out for a Suzuki GT550 4ls, question now is about finding one, does anyone happen to have a spare one knocking around? :D

You've rejected a Commando disk because its too uncontrallable on ice, but are going for the 4LS Suzook brake !
Does anyone else see a flaw in this plan.... ?

The GT550 used the same brake as the GT750 ?, so they are going to be somewhat sought-after.
madass on this forum sells the TZ brakes, and others.
www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-TZ350-TZ-TD2 ... 0861837192
For a fraction of that, you could get a 6 piston caliper/disk Commando setup

Rohan, sorry but I've rejected all discs, I know they are cheaper/better. But it's not the look I need to match the rest of the bike.

There was a friend of mine years ago who owned a drixton aermacchi 350. It was fitted with a dustbin fairing, and inside that fairing was a TZ Yamaha drum brake. The guy used to love the responses he would get when people would walk up to have a close look, and look inside the fairing. After about 3 meetings, the officials kicked up.
