Ammeter plus and minus

Which is which. I have it installed and can't see it. Last thing I need to do for the harness in the headlamp shell before buttoning it all up.

Yes, that is marked on the face, but which terminal is + and which is -.

connect wires any way then turn lights on if showing discharge it is right if showing charge change wires around.
 
If there's a small flash accompanied by the sound of the fuse popping then you've shorted it ! :)
 
I put a 9V battery across it. Looks like + is on the timing side.

Needle on the + side of the scale - your alternator is putting more current into the battery than the bike's system is drawing out. Needle on the - side, the battery is being drained faster that the alternator can top it up. Needle rattling back and forth means engine or road vibration is affecting the meter movement.
