Whilst writing this I see that the spellchecker did not like the word 'kickstarter' and suggested three options, one of which was 'kicks tart' - not very PC!

Am sure we have all used much more err colourful terms when using said lever with success

Bit of thread dredge here
I bought an Alton Starter about 2 years ago for my Combat Roadster and due to hip issues was never fitted it as was not riding for some months then only the electric start bikes.

An Interstate came up recently that had lots spent on it for a reasonable for NZ amount. My plan was to fit the Alton to that , tidy up the Roadster and move it on.
alton starting problems

Well....long story short fitted the Alton, rewired the bike complete with Shorai battery.
Tried out the starter several times in the shed and worked fine, then took the bike for a test ride.
Got home and tried the starter and grinding noise as described in earlier post.
Found the 3 'shear' pins had sheared off.
I had some 10mm silicon hose handy and made up 6 of them, put it all back together and it worked ....once. :(
So can I just get a length of Shore 95 10mm rod and fit 6?

Its a Combat engine which may have something to do with it.
Thanks
John

Are the shear pins the anti kickback fuse, in which case cure the kickbacks. A MK3 boyer will over advance with low voltage and using a starter guarantees this, so go MK4 or a Pazon, also use the kickstarter to slowly push the pistons to just after TDC so the starter gets the energy into the crank flywheel quickly before the plugs fire and also turn on the ignition just before pressing the button so the EI is alive and not in sleep mode.

exactly as above, cure the kickback problem , I use a TriSpark with my Alton, no issues.

thanks guys,

I should have mentioned its got a Pazon ignition, new carbs and the motor has been rebuilt less than 1000 miles.

Kicking back would be obvious? as It starts easily

There were only three 10mm 'fuses' fitted, but there are 6 spaces, should there be 3 or 6?

In October the double gear plugs failed in my Alton starter after not many miles from new. There's room for six plugs but only three had been fitted. Alton supplied me with replacements after a very long delay. This time I've fitted all six so I hope it will last a bit longer.
While I was waiting I took a sample of one of the broken plugs (most of the material had been reduced to dust) to a local engineering plastics supplier for testing, and they said it was polyurethane with a hardness of 95 Shore A. I bought a length of rod to make up my own spare plugs so as not to be dependent on Alton's slow service in future. The diameter of the plugs is 10mm but I could only get 12mm rod with the required hardness, so had to get it turned down.

Kicking back would be obvious?

kicking back indicative of timing being too advanced...

I have been working on adding starter motor using my own design and when using a starter kickbacks can be less than obvious from testing, a monmentary slowdown can be all you see. With that discovery I am not adding anti kickback but using an ignition system with a dedicated starter advance curve which then switches to a running advance curve, once in the running curve the starter relay is isolated so pressing the starter button does nothing. Ignition will retain curve down to 5v, you will lose the spark at the plug before the curve alters.

Buy a CNW Starter I'm marrying mine on Saturday !!! it will be a quiet do, a few guests
and after the wedding deliberately stall and press her button ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh
I like it ................................
