So, I went to Wales last weekend and came home with a very sore arse.

No… it’s not what you’re thinking… the aftermarket seat on my Harley (Saddlemen job) is a seat that I have been really happy with hitherto for rides of up to a coupe of hours at a time. But for all day riding, it was painful. The pressure points on my arse bone (dunno the proper name) were quite painful at the end of each day.

So, I’ve been looking at Airhawk and Wild Ass seat cushions.

Anyone tried ‘em? Any feedback ?

I’ve had an air hawk for 10 years or so, it does do a good job of evening out the pressure. The key is to have just enough air in it.
My use has been for an upright riding position, I guess cruiser style would work well too. Sport bike knee down type stuff would be awkward.

On my 9 days of riding 5k KM's on my modern Bonneville, I used a car seat cushion from local auto parts store. It has a rubber honeycomb inner section, not foam, for good air flow, no actual support. It did a pretty descent job on a seat I cannot usually handle for more than a few hours a day. Later in hot weather, I added a sheep skin cover for even better cooling.
Was also considering a "Bead Rider" seat cover as these have a lot of good reviews. They can be made from similar covers sold for car seats at a lot lower price than for motorcycles.

Nigel,

No experience with any of those seats but I have a Seth Laam on my FJR and it’s very comfortable. Unfortunately I believe he needs you seat base and there is a long lead time.

He will build the seat to match you body size and shape. I don’t mind the Corbin hard foam on my Commando but for the long haul a comfortable seat is important. Just came back from a 1,700 mile trip and felt like I was sitting on a (140hp) sofa. I have the Carbon Fiber vinyl, it can be a little slippery, but that my only complaint.

I fitted a $40 MiC Amazon Airhawk knock off. It can be filled with air or water. I have only tun it air filled. Love it - can ride all day - no more sore ass.

I use an air hawk and am very happy with it. 600 miles a day, no problem. I can only manage 300 without it on my Limited Harley (standard seat). I did not know you got a Harley. What model?

2016 Dyna Low Rider S Jerry. 110” Screamin’ Eagle motor. I put Ohlins shocks on and a Saddlemen seat. The seat seemed great, but after a point it ain’t !
Here it is complete with QD panniers ready for some miles…

Nice bike. That seat looks much better than the stock one on my bike. I installed the Harley rider back rest as well. That along with the air hawk really helps. I had a broken lower back when I was about 19 ( bad accident on a commando), so suffering with arthritis there.

The seat is good, most of the time.

It gives a great riding position and good lower back support. It’s a kinda ‘grippy’ material too so really helps hold you in place when (ahem) throwing it around.

Bit after long enough in the saddle, I get two painful pressure points on my are’s bones that restart to hurt and then HURT!

The stock seat on my bike was a joke!

I really like the bike though, just such an enjoyable thing to ride.

Nigel,
Very nice looking bike, and as expected it has the “Fast Eddie” touch applied to it. The gold rims are a nice touch. I always wondered if the ”feet forward” seating position some times causes a problem over prolonged saddle time.
I could also be mistaken about this, but I think the keys on the seat might also cause a little discomfort
I see the tins are missing on the Trident Hunter, you got something up your sleeve?
Pete

Pete,
Actually the HDs footrests are NOT the foreword controls !
Trident Hunter was just being fettled, but I do actually have an interstate set up I’ve been threatening to try for a while. Maybe one day…

I’ve got gel seats on the ZZR14 and Hayabusa as they’re only 50 mile seats otherwise. I’ve previously had Corbin and loved them.
I’ve not tried an Airhawk but I’ve heard good reports of them.
But, as you happened to be in the land of scared sheep, you could consider a sheepskin cover, they work well.

i have Mustang seat on the Honda Aero cruiser thing and passenger part of seat as well has great lower back support and padding is just right for my buttocks and wife's too my 2cents worth

Nigel,

Perhaps the term "feet forward" was a little misleading. What I was trying to say was, looking at your photograph it seems that the location of your footpegs in relationship to your seating position is increasing the angle of your knees. In my experience the further forward my feet got away from being under my hips the more pressure was on my arse, lower back and spine. This was the main reason I put rearsets on my Commando. Even my "Classic" Wing puts my feet under my hips pretty deep. Two of my riding buddies both have their pegs more forward than mine (UJM Cruiser and HD) and are always wanting to stop for breaks more often. I can't imagine riding with full blown forward controls would be like.
What ever you do with the Hunter I'm sure it will look great, just not sure what an extra 2.5-3 gallons of fuel will do to the handling.
Pete

Pete I’m quite sure you’re right about the HD riding position increasing the pressure on my arse!

Ref the Trident Hunter, the use the bike is put to currently jus’ doesn’t warrant a bigger tank etc, so I don’t think it’ll be interstated anytime soon.
