A little N15CS help

Hello all

Wanted to first introduce myself as a new member on the board. I have owned a few Norton's thru the years, 1966 Atlas 1972 Commando Roadster 1971 Commando Roadster. Recently picked up an 80% complete 1967 N15CS that I need a bit of direction on.

First off, can someone provide me the size and length of the front mounting "tubes" on the gas tank? Somewhere along the line the previous owner cut them off and I need to fab up some new ones to weld on.

Second, some dimensions would also be appreciated for the fuel tank mounting tabs on the frame as they were also hacked off flush with the casting on the frame tubes.

Third, does anyone have a recommendation on the best place to send my aluminum bits off to for removing chrome? I am located in North Carolina and in typical early 70's flair, everything that could be plated was done and is now in horrible shape. Dont want to have to replace all of the aluminum covers etc if I dont have to.

Thanks all, and there have been some great posts on here already that I have been reading up on.

Happy Motoring....

Welcome to this forum Sly. There were a number of N15CS's at the Vermont Norton rally. I think you would have the same tank as my G80CS. (see my avatar)

I can measure the front tubes and frame mounts when I get home this afternoon.

Welcome.

I'll get some measurements as well.

I've never had to strip chrome off aluminum, so don't have a resource for that.

Battery acid will often remove deteriorated chrome - unless its been heavily undercoated with nickel. Use it spareingly on the alloy, it will eat it too.
Take all the usual precautions - acid will also eat clothes, eyes, and flesh !

Any chrome shop should be able to do this. Whether they will want to is another question...

Thanks for the quick replies. I figured I may have to call around to any local chromers in the Charlotte area. I may also get up with Space Coast Plating and Advanced Plating to get their prices and willingness to give it a shot.

I appreciate the measurements on the tank and mounting. It just drives me crazy when this happens, but I know that usually it is in some half-crazed attempt to customize the frame etc...... Just leaves a mess for anyone looking to have it any resemblance of stock.

I know, I know cardinal sin on my part. I am out of town at the moment and will be back this weekend. I will grab a few snaps and post them up then.

The front mounting tubes on my ~M~ G80CS tank are 1-13/16" long and about 1.29" OD. (slightly oval so hard to be accurate.)

The tank mounting lugs on the frame are short tubes flattened at one end. They stick out 2-9/16" on each side and it is about 5" center to center on the tank mounting holes. Not sure what is left of your mounts.

Thanks Batrider....

That will help me out a ton in the restoral of the tank and mounts. The only portion of the tank mounting left on the frame is the cast portion on the frame. The tubes were cut off flush with that casting. I will get some photos of the scoot up tomorrow when I have a chance to take a few.

Happy motoring......

Still no photos to post, some will be forthcoming.

Heading to the Springfield, OH Walneck's swap meet next weekend and need some guidance on a centerstand for the N15. Does anyone have a photo of one so I have a good reference for what exactly I will be looking for?

Also, after removing the motor and trans from the frame, I found that a PO had repaired the side stand location by welding in a new section of pipe and a thru boss for the stand mounting. Only issue with that is, it was essentially welded in at a 0 deg to the frame orientation. From looking at the side stand that was bolted to the location, shouldnt it be sitting at more like a 45-60 deg angle for proper placement of the stand?

With no real access to frame diagrams or photos, I am designing in the dark here.

Thanks all, and if you will also be at Springfield, would love to know it.

Happy Motoring.....
