I am not a mechanic and I would like to do what a motorcycle shop would call a full service on my 1973 850 Mark II.

What exactly is a full service? Oil, spark plugs etc.

The Commando has electronic ignition.

Thanks

Frank

Nope that's just lists routine owner up keep similar to putting gas in the tank. Full service implies cable conditions and adjusting, brakes checked and maybe rebuilt, carb cleaning and tuning after timing checked and chains condition and tension, electrical gremlins, isolastic adjusting or renewing, clutch shaft wobble to axle bearings covered the lighter tasks towards full service road worthy. Most Commandos need so much its not cost effective compared to becoming a British motorcycle shop yourself. Tricky to find a shop that's familiar with Commandos but they exist.

Id disconnect oil return , clean tank , refill & run ( ensureing oil tank stays half full 0 untill its expungeing CLEAN oil from the return hose , before reconecting .

A STROBE LIGHT will alow you to check the ADVANCE Vs R.P.M.s , as well as Timing .

Exactitude setting valve clearances , One Valve Fully Depressed , Then Rotate crank 360 degrees . ( we leave the plugs out till last - On Center Stand or Beer Crate -
and ' bump ' the rear wheel ( by Hand ) to position cylinders :? Er PISTONS / Crank EXACTLY ) If the DRAG on the Feeler Guage - no cheap Jap ones :P is exactly
the same on Ea Piston ( Er Valve Adjuster 0 the clearance is the same . One would think . V. Light Drag - experiment on adjuster Vs Drag to find ' Free ' .
Noteing the inlets and Exhausts are Differant clearances of course . So Set In. as pair & Ex as pair . And check the Ex Pipe Nuts , Then HOT imediately after the test ride,
before lockwireing or tabbing , if you do .

Youre also expected to see its clean and polished , before delivery to the customer . :P IF it needs CLEANING , do it BEFORE seviceing . So gritt & gook DONT get INTERNAL .

Pays to see it runs clean at Redline in Third , . :D .

I'd better get cracking if I'm going to get it all done.

I've even read the service manual.

Thanks

Frank

Note: It takes a while and a world wide village to discover the errors and omissions across the C'do range plus as might apply to your particular serial number in the several manuals out there, factory issued to after market and tech manuals put out by INOA or NOC. The big global scale vendors also know and advice on work arounds, upgrades and alerts.
