Hello just got my 1974 850 back from sitting for couple years in heated garage upon draining old gas, breaking clutch in, charged sealed battery, Upon kicking starting it backfires at times, smokes from carbs, almost seems like ignition switch smokes, and it throws the lever like a rocket through my ankle/foot... I'm actually afraid to try it again until I get a better understanding of what going on. Its stock points maybe upgraded rectifier other than that not sure.... Where do i start electrical or other I should mention It has not yet started also it was starting second kick prior to storage but has always had these issues from time to time.... :? Thanks any help is much appreciated.... Jer

Check the wiring. Check voltage at coils and compare to battery and both sides of ignition switch. Maybe static timing to make sure. Get the electrics working right first.

Battery terminals the right way around?
Drained the oil from the sump & refilled tank?
Advance/retard unit siezed?
Timing too advanced?
Oh, & mixture screws too far out or O rings split?

Air/fuel, compression and spark at the right time is all it is.
How did it run when you laid it up?
if ok, then I suspect an intake valve not closing completely. Check that out.
I have worked valves closed in an old rototiller engine by being persistent with a screwdriver through the plug hole by pushing down on the valve itself, letting the spring return it until it finally seated. Just a thought.

and it throws the lever like a rocket through my ankle/foot

This part sounds like timing too far advanced as others mentioned. Mean machine that bites if in this condition. :)

Maybe the advance is stuck? Check the points to make sure everything is moving freely and lubed.
