72 commando finished, runs good except for first gear hard to get into gear all the other gears are fine. Tried readjusting primary chain no help. When i had the gear box apart i installed the new fag roller bearing and adjusted the end play to a tight .005. any ideas i think i may have to readjust the preload

Re: 72 commando hard to get in first gear all

The bike shifts into first gear, but will not engage until you roll the bike forward is that normal Thanks Steve

If it happens all the time, it does not sound normal, it seems that the cam track is indexing but the selectors are not engaging the pinions. Does it select second from neutral OK or are the same symptoms experienced?

Yes, first can sometimes be finicky. Rolling the bike slightly can help, and obviously you want no drag on the clutch.

Is it possible that it is just clutch drag? Because of the different gear ratios it can be harder to detect the drag in higher gears. Has your clutch been given a good cleaning? I'd give the clutch a look before I tore into the gearbox. Mostly because I am lazy.

Tried it again this morning little bit better with the idle turned down around 850. Yes it does the same thing with the engine running or off. I would say 7 out of 10 time it worked ok Just doesn't seem to be shifting far enough. Works fine in second to forth. Neutral was ok this morning but it was hard to fined before turning idle down. The clutch pack was replaced with a new barrnet clutch. Not sure how to tell if the clutch is draging seems to be ok. Neutral to second gear is fine. I Just did a complete overhaul on all the components and change the bearing in the gearbox Still wonder if the end play is to tight. Thanks again for all the advice. Steve

Are you pretty sure you have .005 end play? If you can detect any end play at all then too tight shouldn't be an issue.

I didn;t like the effect i was getting by shimming for end play with the "suberblend" layshaft bearing. Sometime binding , sometimes loose. I ended up pull the "superblend" and put in a good quality conventional bearing. End play no longer and issue. Maybe I didnt do everything just right, I don't know about that, but I do know that I hear of this end play crap just a little too often.

Another banned topic...no end play discussions.

Check your shaft anyway and see with everything tightened down if you can detect any end play at all. Once the gaskets are sucked down you might have lost what you had. Rotate the shaft by hand and see if you can feel drag on it. Pull in the clutch so you aren't trying to rotate the engine. I shimmed mine until tightened down I could feel it drag, then I took 5-thousandths out. Took three tries and was not very scientific but it worked. Now when I grab the kick lever and jiggle I can feel the slightest movement.

My bike acts in a similar way.
When cold it will shift into first no problem.
Once running a while if I put it into neutral then try for first I get a slight mechanical click but it usually won't engage.
I find that by pulling the clutch level about 1" short of all the way back it will shift into gear ok.
Too far back and won't work and not enough back makes a small crunch.

Another way that works for me is to put upward pressure on shift lever with foot then slowly let out clutch lever.
It will then snick into first.
Can't let out lever too fast or may cause grab and stall.

This doesn't answer the question of why the shifting problem but for me it a work around that works.
