Here are pics of fender/tail light treatment . Tail light is the aluminum casting from Old Brits - bought the raw one and finished it myself . A good friend of mine who is indeed a very good welder filled the holes in the stainless fender for me and I dressed them off with files then blocked various grades of silicone carbide papers and finally two stages on the buffing wheel.

The taillight is a huge improvement over the stock Norton item - at least from an aesthetic viewpoint.

Thanks for looking -RT

Make sure you look very closely as sometimes the stamp is barely there - see photo of my cylinder head
I couldn't find a stamp on mine (72 Combat) although it had the close space between the top barrel and bottom head fin. Running an RH6 on it now since the original would not seal properly due to a screwed up repair.

Oh Happy Day ! - oilway blanking screw that could not be removed because it was heavily staked in three places - probably by some Norton worker who had been told by management that cranks had been found with no staking -has been successfully drilled out - threads saved and chased - and new plug dry fitted !

A task that I was dreading with a lot of potential for heartache is behind me now - may have to quaff some malt & hops medicine tonight !

Yessiree !!

Rods gone over for nicks and cleaned , new shells , bolts & nuts and installed on crank .

SWMBO out of the house for the day so a good time to sneak the cases into the oven and pop the new bearings in . All windows now open wide and all fans turning @ redline to try and rid the house of hot engine smell . My bride can smell a single ant's fart in a hurricane so pray for me .

In the event of my demise I've left instructions dividing up my Nortons and all the ancillaries . ;);)

Mine came from eBay - sorry I can't seem to provide a link - do a search in eBay motorcycle parts for Norton engine stand - seller is bsanut from San Jose CA USA -$ 89 USD + shipping.
Andover Norton also offer a similar stand - part no. 06.7335 in their Tools section - theirs may be a little less money - hope this helps - RT

New points, auto advance springs - Ignition static timed on the bench , crankshaft primed and now ready for cylinder head . Need to polish up new Stainless bits for head and engine mounting and then engine back into chassis - a real milestone. Nice to feel some progress.

Congrats, that’s a milestone alright. Looking very nice too.

I hope you mounted the horn? That’s the first thing that goes on the bench and the rest of the bike is assembled to / around it!

What’s the final style gonna be, Roadster / Interstate? What colour you planning?

I’d ask you about tyres, but life’s too short to go down that rabbit hole!

Horn is indeed in place as is oil filter base .
Style will be Roadster - Black with Gold lining - planning on making a fiberglass cowl for the Corbin seat hump and painting to match tank. May go with clubman bars but in upright (road ) position.

I hope I don’t start trouble here but I like K81/TT 100’s - had them on it before. A little short lived mileage wise on the rear but as this will be bike number 4 in the stable I don’t accumulate many miles on any of them .

Thanks for the compliments and interest - RT

Doubt you get many negatives about the K81’s.
Argueably the most correct looking tire on a Commando there is.
Did I read somewhere the K81 410/19 was made special for the Commando?

Nice looking BTW.

I’m thoroughly impressed with the quality of your work and the bike itself. Thanks for the great pictures.

Primary drive largely back together. Lots of hand work on the inner cover . The sprue gates at the front and rear of the inner primary cover were pretty ugly where they were simply sawn off - not so much as even frightening them with the threat of a file . A sign of the times I suppose of a failing industry. I now wish I had taken some before photos but alas I did not.

Thanks everyone for the interest and kind words .

Cheers - RT
