71 Commando basket case restoration

No front end was included so I've grafted on a set of 99 R6 forks. I like the idea of modern suspension and brakes, anyway.
The hub is off an 84 Virago, the discs from a 93 R6. I cut down the Yamaha steering stem to fit the 20mm Norton bearings. It looks okay although with a 13mm hole through the stem there's not a lot of meat left. May just make another one.
I got the Virago hub because I wanted dual discs on a spoked wheel and it was suggested to at least stick with the same brand. That turned out to be excellent advice. After replacing the 15 mm wheel bearings with 20mm, turning down the R6 axle and making some spacers the discs are running right in the center of the calipers without having the shim anything. Pretty amazing they've kept the boss diameter, side to side and bolt hole spacing the same over the years.
The top triple clamp has no provisions for bar risers so I'll try clip ons and see if I can stand them.
My goal is to get done before I'm too old to start it.

Excellent work on that front end. i guess i should have stuck to it longer to find a workable front wheel, I ended up spending several pretty pennies on the dreer hub & brembo brakes.

Those forks look almost exactly like kawasaki ZRX units...

That is going to look wild, non traditional, but that is how most Commandos ended up shortly after leaving the showroom floor which is why it is so rare to see a 100 point ** original ** (not a restauration)
