Hey guys,

I have a 74 commando roadster. I wanted to solder the wires behind my key switch. Tried every thing before soldering them : turn signals, horn, hi-beam, every thing was working.

Then after, only the font right turn signal is blinking. Right back and the front and rear left turn signals are not working.

Is there something in should know? Could it be the switch on the handlebar?

Thanks.

"Welding" of wires is a term unfamiliar to me. I am not sure what you tried to do, or what you have actually done.

Did you mean to say "soldering" wires? If so, I suspect you bridged terminals with solder.
The remedy will be to remove excess solder with a copper wick or "solder sucker".

Slick

Yes sorry, I meant soldering the wires to the key switch. I modify my question :). French Canadian... sometimes, my bilingual skills are farrrr farrr way :)

Another possible cause of your problem:

Perhaps excessive heat has done internal damage to your switch.

Disconnect all wires from switch, then test switch with an Ohm meter.

Thanks, that was one of my supposition. I’ll look into it

While testing the Titanic's turn signals (see recent thread "Weird Electrical Issue) I discovered, to my surprise, that with one signal disconnected, the other on that side would still blink. I was under the impression that a burnt-out bulb would be indicated by the other one not blinking, but evidently one is enough to trip the blinker relay. So if the wires are alright, it may just be a bad bulb on that side.

The switch is fed from the relay by a brown wire with a purple stripe. It powers either side depending on which way the switch is flipped, so your problem, if the bulbs check out ok, is in the wiring to the signals themselves. I would still dismantle the switch and clean the contacts and grease the moving parts, but my guess is the switch is probably ok if it works one way. Mine was fine after being submerged.

The other thing to remember is, if something is different after you laid hands on it, it was probably something you did.

I had this last week on my mk3 and it was a poor earth connection to the rear indicators. I ran an extra earth from the rear stem nuts (as the earth is the external indicator tube) to the red earth lead for the rear lights and all is now OK

Why were you soldering those wires? A soldering iron or gun should never be used on a Norton or anything that vibrates. Crimp only.

You positive you got it wired back correctly? All your grounds connected?
