22 year old and my first norton 650 ss :) from england

I am running a cheapish EK Standard (Enuma) jap chain EK 428 76 link R332 with no issues ,probably from RGM/Norville think the size is0.5x0.335x0.305ins ,worth checking your engine sprocket teeth number in case its geared up. STD chain for 650 is 76 links. I think Reynold is now French and very basic standard.Worth buying a spare spring link at the same time, they wear faster.

All sorted an ready for a run :) gonna help my uncle with his gt750 next so we can all go out again together hopefully get out one evening on the SS totally going to Monyash later in the week again as the weather looks good.

These video's an pic's sum up the motivation behind a extended career break for dad and I.

Smiling happy over the moon the pleasure motorcycles bring is insurmountable making memories for years to come!

The Norton 650SS ran like a dream today better than I could have ever hoped a while ago. Just goes to show perseverance, advice and research pay off. To think the 650ss is from 1967 she belies her age!!

Slight tweak to make on the gearbox but the engine part is running spot on!

Thanks everyone not stopped grinning seriously happy!

Hahaha yeah I've got a stack of those norton shirts liked the design :) an the fit.
Finally fitting back in some of my old gear though so in a Barbour one. Nortons keep you fit!

The only thing I need to check after today's ride was the timing side sounded like it had a whine. Wondering if the chains are a lil tight Could be timing chain tension maybe? Or a noise from the auto advance sure the gopro footage will have captured it clear as a bell.

Always has been a bit whiney around 3,500 though just hearing it clearer now all the other noise issues are fixed.

An just need to check this gear issue where shes going from 3rd to neutral sometimes.

One thing though shes well on the way to being sorted got drenched on her today an she handled epic in the wet. Very confidence inspiring bike.

Cheers mate I'll check those out while I have the gearbox apart I'll start with the springs in the outer cover first. Been considering taking it apart anyway to check the lay shaft bearing out after all the stuff I've read online.

After replacing one with a roller I found it needed a lot of playing with to get the end float correct. Don't think it was a big issue with the Dommies and an uprated ball bearing was preferred by Hemmings who is THE box man. If anything the bush for the layshaft (very difficult to get out) can cause the layshaft to move around and is the one neglected .Selector springs seem to vary in shape ,I bought 3 from different places. None were perfect,2 got slung!.

Is the selector spring the one in the outside cover bob?

I'll get some more gaskets ordered tomorrow an have a look inside the box have had the cover off before replacing the seal on the kickstart.

Yes ,the G/change springs (2) are in the outer cover ,the triangular pawl sits between the arms of one. the pawl needs the tinyest bit of clearance from both legs. I do think the most likely culprit is the cam plate /plunger not positively locating. But as you say could be a bent selector or misstimed camplate. L.A.B. is right why have you put the drive side on the right side of the bike ?,clever lad!!.

haha yeah its the norton rider special flipped engine :p front camera on my phone reversed the image and i didn't notice lol

Thanks mate I'll take the outer cover off just incase something isn't together correctly I'll have a read up about the cam plates. my first thought was a smashed selector from the rd350lc's but obv they dont have a cam plate.

Thanks Seattle Yeah there's some stunning roads near me :) can't wait to get out on her again probably on Saturday might try sneak a small ride in tomorrow.

Know it's a bit outta sequence but here's the video when I found the issue with the rocker spindles right through to fixing them and getting her started.

The footage from the cat and fiddle ride is exporting but that's probably gonna take till tonight as it's massive

Gotta be said getting her back on the road so quick wouldn't have been possible without Gaz an Les at Norvil taking time to squeeze me in so I could get parts an them passing on some epic advice to me.

After consulting with the Yoda's next thing I wanna do is just take the timing chain cover off an check the timing chain tension as I think that's where the whine is coming from. Didn't wanna mess with to much while I was doing the rocker spindles. Hence not doing it then now I know that's all sorted it's operation timing chain tension then gearbox.
