The petrol tank & tail on my 1968 Commando were originally metal flake red but the chain guard and extension piece were also that colour when I became it’s second owner in the early 70’s. That has puzzled me because all the information I have seen says the chain guards were all black. Does anyone know the truth?

I believe some bikes were repainted at the distributors/dealers when new.The original colors were too bland for the mod squad hippie 60's. I have seen the chain guards and side covers painted to match the tail and tank on some but not all 68's. Was your bike imported from the USA?

Mine was one of the few hundred 1968 UK bikes. The only things the first owner did to it was fit early PR exhausts, clip-on handlebars, Rear sets, front brake performance kit and Dunstall finned rocker covers and brass exhaust ring nuts.
