Thruxton R details

Four of us (2BMWs, 2 Hinckley triumphs) are heading off tomorrow for a three day run thru all kinds of terrain.
The Temperatures are expected to be close to 100 f in the interior areas and as cool as 45 f in the am out on Whidbey Island where we will overnight on Tuesday.
For the heat I'm using ventilated riding gear but that means lots of additional layers are needed for the 45 f bit.
Wasn't sure if it would all fit in these little Triumph panniers, but it is in with a little room to spare.

We had our trip and it was a good one though pretty hot for some of it (100 f in Winthrop, WA.)
The bike is great for solo touring like this. The luggage setup worked well but I plan to find space for a bit more on there.

With the big torque output and relatively light weight the bike is a real rocketship when it's time to pass a long line of vehicles.
We found out pretty quickly that the 1150gs BMW with aobut 85 horses and a lot of weight will leave the lighter 69 bhp 865 Triumph for dead when it's pass time. Strangely, the 1200rt with 110 horses and similar weight to the GS walks away from the 1150 but doesn't run away.
The 1200RT rider said the 97 hp Thrux R's passing acceleration made him think his engine had gone to sleep.
Then there's the handling, even more gap there, though the BMWs are very good for their size.

So much for the ratings and the reality of the road.

Have I mentioned that I like this Triumph?

Thruxton r at Donnington teasing those 961s to come out and race :D

Looks like the R is a good track bike right out of the box.
In the comments section the rider is asked how the Thruxton R compares to a "real sportbike" and the owner replies that it was "Brilliant, on par with my Daytona 675R"
The 675r Daytona has about130 horses, weighs nothing and is generally quicker than most litre sportbikes on tight tracks, so that's good company to be in.

Had a chance to use the bike on a long tour thru the Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta,Washington State, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.
All in all we covered 4,830 kms without a hiccup. We went up over the 11,000 ft Beartooth plus did the "Into the Sun" road in Glacier National Park. Toward the end of the tour we stayed at a friend's ranch in the Waterton Park area of Alberta. Very beautiful looking West at the Rockies.

The incredible roll on power of this bike is sure nice when you want to pass a lump of 8 or 10 vehicles in one gulp.

On the last day I covered 1080 kms without any comfort problems, although I did get a bit fatigued. Stopped in a Provincial park for a nap and found a dry ditch that had just the right shape. I fell asleep quickly and awoke just as quickly to hear a woman calling out to me "are you OK?" I guess I looked like a dead man lying in that ditch!
The ten minute nap was enough to get the focus back for the remaining 400 kms or so to home.

I went to Hinckley today, had to attend a meeting in a hotel called 'Jury's Inn'.

Inside they have a bar called 'Triumph'!

They had a pretty impresive ornament behind the bar... I shall resist the urge for a cheap joke about it being the best thing for them

Sounds like a happy camper, doesn't he !!

There must be more to this story, if they "stripped other bikes for parts" why isn't his going ??
Triumph have a good reputation for warranty stuff too, can't imagine they would let it get to this.
The bidders obviously don't think so either...

This has been all over the place including the 961 forum here, the BSA a 10 forum and the Triumph forum.

If you read thru the entire rant you will see its all over a missing gear lever bolt.
The ranter is a bit off plumb. Or as Festus used to say "He's teched in the head Marshall!"

Glen

Don't read a lot of the 961 forum bits I'm afraid Glen. Apologies to all inconvenienced by the post.

Dave, sorry if my response came across badly, it wasn't intended to.

I guess I'm surprised at the amount of havoc this guy is wreaking over a bolt.
On the eBay site he has many responders saying " Wow, I'm glad I didn't buy a Triumph" or "I was going to buy one of these but i sure won't now" etc, etc. It seems people really want to believe these great bikes are bad.
Apparently almost no one reads his entire rant to see what the problem is/was. People just assume since there is great anger, there must be great multiple problems. There aren't.
Apparently a bolt fell out of the gear lever. He says the dealership replaced it but they obviously had words with him re his attitude and this is his revenge.

Glen

No worries Glen,

my thoughts on the guy is that if he cant replace a simple bolt himself then he shouldn't be allowed access to a motorcycle - regardless of any warranty or perceived basic quality issue.

Mercifully, the guy's agony will end on eBay in about 11 hours.
Then he can go out and buy himself a

JAPANESE FOUR CYLINDER.

Which is after all, what he really wanted anyway.

He is just a penis with ears, thats all I can say about this fool.

Ashley

Dude's agony is over.
eBay bid has ended - 19,700 AUS.
Now former owner's whining is over, and he can take his cash and buy his Japanese four cylinder.

I guess the buyer recognized that the only problem had been the missing gear lever bolt, now replaced. Even with all of his warnings they paid up for it quite well. Maybe a couple of thousand off new at dealer?
Almost not worth having to meet and deal with the guy for just 2 grand.

Glen

Maybe he is smarter than we take him for getting such a high price for a lemon  seems some have to much money to spend like Glen said anouther 2k and you have a new bike with full warranty and running it in your way.

Ashley

Glen - In looking at your paniers, I was wondering what model they are and how they might line up for use on a Commando and how far off they might be to tweak to use the upper shock mount and the footpeg mounting holes on the z plate? Thoughts?

They are Triumph panniers, very well made, if a bit small.
I'll see how the bracket fits the Commando tomorrow. It only takes a couple of minutes to remove it. I would like to try it on several of the bikes here.
I have some throw over Cortechs I've used on the Commando but they slip slide around some. Also don't hold their shape well.
These Triumph panniers are made of much heavier material which holds it's shape nicely.

Glen

They attach to some quick buckles that are anchored on the frame.
I didn't move the quick buckles over but here is the pannier on the Norton. It lined up perfectly at bottom with the muffler ISO attachment.
