Side cover painting

I have this almost mint 76 CB750F. I've found a replacement left side cover, and the correct paint. Any suggestions as to what I should sand with between coats?

Sandpaper ?

What sort of paint are we talking here ?
What is the finish like ?

1000 or 2000 grade, if its smooth and unblemished, you only want the paint to be keyed into the previous coat.

But I haven't seen your set up, or know the paint type...

PS Local paint teacher, tech college only ever sands at this point with dry paper - says introducing water into his precious parts is a no no.
Has won numerous concours d'elegance, might know what he is talking about...

Your second post was more helpful. Ha Wasn't sure if they use a special type of abrasive for plastic parts.? Anywho, I ended up using 1000 grit. Turned out pretty good. Thanx
