I could always beat Todd to the first corner. But then I don't think he had any brakes.

The F/Bed was not designed / built for this amount of HP especially at flat out racing speeds.

Joe Craig and Doug Hele would be amused at that statement ?
Thats precisely where featherbeds originated. ??
Not to mention numerous builders of Norvins....

It was only an afterthought that got them into roadbikes.

You seem to know your bikes, however, my critical eye spots the picture of Paul Dunstall on his drainpipe Norton, I see the engine further forward, inclined like a Commando and fitted lower down in the chassis. Compare that with a F/bed mounted with a twin.
The reason he did that was because the racers , who would drive them harder and faster than most people ride on the road, complained about the f/bed lifting the front wheel everywhere when mounted with the 70+ BHP tuned Atlas engine.

them olde Nortons sure were gutless . :)

Finalaly founda copy , or one similar . NOW , just to upset certain individuals - a few of the late tuned manxes were reputed to be produceing 60 Hp
with the odd coustom internal apparatus . like piston , rod , crank & a few other bits , such as a forged one piece pin LH Flywheel & shaft in one of
Hailwoods .

( YES , & it is a MANX Triton Frame , with a 30M Norton Engine  )

Which number are you and on what bike in the pic?

I would be 104 on a 750 Norton.
Coming from a 3rd row start -Tod was in the 1st row. Jim

Yes, and it's just cresting the mountain at Cadwell Park, where just about anything will lift the front wheel......................

The lifting of the front wheel to which I referred was off the start line, - no big hump to help throw the bike up into the air. If the race is clutch start, it is unusual for a featherbed to stand up even with a very powerful motor unless the motor is too far back. Even a 1/2 inch too far back is too much. My triton always felt light and vague in the front end until I remade the engine plates. The aluminium front mount on the crankcases then touched the steel mounts on the frame tubes. The bike still did not handle as good as the manx, however a lot of that was probably due to the lack of torque from the short stroke Triumph engine. The comparison between the handling of the late model 500cc short stroke manx, and my home-brewed short stroke 500cc Triton was 'chalk and cheese '. However the Triton was cheaper to race, if nastier. I was offered the manx for $1300 in about 1973 and because I already had an uncompetitive bike, I refused it. A few years later it was returned to NZ for about $50,000. However a t least I'd had the experience of riding it really hard on a short tight circuit. And that is a problem - most of the young guys coming along will never know what those beautiful bikes were really like to ride hard. Development for historic racing ruins good original bikes. I seriously suggest that if you are into road racing and see someone with an original manx with 19 inch wheels, go and offer them money for a ride on it around a race circuit, simply for the learning experience.

# 61 , Tyler is nearly 16, only a matter of time before he gets offered a Manx to play with.
1,2,3 are guys under 30 and Chris Swallow rides the TT , his Dad is a regular here too.
The White Norton mentioned earlier ridden by a seasoned BEARS rider was doing 1.16 laps, 6 seconds faster than a pushrod single :D
Interesting is # 10 David Morely, who spoke last year at a Vintage Bike Meeting. His first international race was back in 1958 at Thruxton ( I think it was) and the winner of that race was a Mike Hailwood on a T110.

I wish you would not post stuff about British historic racing. I know I will never get there unless I win a lottery . I was in the UK in 2008, and really loved it, the Brits do the nostalgia thing so well ! (- so bloody beautiful !) We have a couple of places around here which have a slight resemblance - Tasmania and New Zealand, and that only makes it worse.

We had our Classic Racing Festival here in the weekend, weather was good and had lots of fun.
Interesting to see a Commando holding its own with more modern machines

You'd have to happy as a 16 year old to be riding a Manx Norton and come 3rd
He was only riding it as his ES2 had cam follower issues, he's a second slower on that.

I was pleased to take 4 seconds off my 2013 times at 1.28 on the 50 HP BMW.

Thanks for posting that John, any chance of posting the OM.OPC class for the weekend from the NZCMRR page as I am unable to get to the result page on my system here in India?
Sounds like you went well
Regards Mike

Yes I was pretty pleased, I have not passed the Harley for a few meets and he was giving me some advice about built up cams " don't use them they don't work, that's why your bike is slow"
It must have heard as it perked up when it saw the Harley and whupped it twice
Only mods I had made were taking all the insides out of the exhaust and upping the rev limiter to 8000. The new Sticky Avons may have helped too.
Have you thought about the Hamilton Winter Series ? was good last year, they ran a Post Classic Class.

Hi johnm yes use marktime, just have issues acessing some sites from where I am

John, well done on the BMW, keep me posted on the Winter Series and if i am home will attend.
Post some pics if you have some

Hi Mike. If you want to PM me with an e mail address I can send you the PDFs of the race results. Faster than copying them all here.

John

Hi johnm , thanks for the offer, finally got onto MarkTime, so reviewed all the class results. Looks like I will have to up my game as there a fewm more competitors in the OPC class that I contest.
Looks like they also used the long track for Taupo, I was there with the race bike for a track day three weeks ago.
Regards Mike

Yes I understand from my friends that they did use the Taupo long track. I have never ridden on the new Taupo track. My onboard racing interest faded someone after a highside on the old Taupo track which left me in hospital for two weeks with a broken pelvis. (Ouch!) I rode a few times after that but in my sixties I don't have the bravery (stupidity ??) any more :) I do like the street circuits however because its like being a kid again and you dont really need to ride that fast to have a bit of fun. My biggest problem was my competiveness surpassed my talent !!! Im away in Romania working these days but had a few seasons with a guy called Tony McQueen on my bike. He is frankly a brilliant rider and cleaned up the 500 clubmans and two seconds in the NZ 500 TT on what was basically a clubmans bike. He lapped Pukekohe at 1 min 11 seconds on a clubmans 500 with an engine that hadnt been touched for two seasons.
