Off My Rocker Box

Interesting TSB. Does that mean that the earlier 961s did not have the mesh filter, and the TSB was for installing one?

Interesting.
That mesh strainer is quite small.
I wonder just how much metal was in that clog?

Also, are the TSBs available anywhere on-line. I don't see them in the Resource area here, but I'm sure we would all appreciate seeing them there, if possible.

TSB 00014 was the biggest tsb Norton did. It was in an attempt to address the excessive breathing and wet sumping.
I argued the pick up gauze was too small years ago....but was naturally fobbed off.
Usually it was lint blocking the pick up, as Norton did not have a proper parts washer, so we only had brake cleaner and cloths to clean engine components prior to engine assembly.

The tsb was for resolving the "oil in the airbox" problem, and involved several components including the mesh scavenge filter. None of which were standard equipment on the 961 prior to the tsb.

Here is the complete TSB.
Maybe someone can move it over to the tech help site.

Thanks, Fred. I remember seeing that thread now, but it was six years ago, and my memory is a bit erratic now. I was very interested in the subject when I bought my 961 in 2018, because It seemed to me that it pumped an excessive amount of oil into the air box. But I was apparently one of the lucky ones, because after I put a few thousand more miles on it, it was much improved. Now if I drain it after a days riding, all I get are a few drops. So I didn't do any of the mods in the TSB. In hindsight, I'm guessing that the rings just needed to seat. It only had 402 miles on the odometer when I bought it, and apparently just needed some breaking in.

For me the breather kit did the trick. My 961 would pump oil into the airbox and down the drain line on startup. I'd get a nice slick below the bike before riding off. I had the entire kit installed by my dealer, but I think the fix in the kit for my problem was the press-in oil pump check valve. It stopped the oil migration from the tank to the sump. Now my oil level stays between the high and low marks on the dipstick, and my catch bottle is mostly dry.

Thanks BriTwit, If you can P.M. it to me as an attachment I'll gladly add it to the tech help site.
