Powdercoated sprockets are going to make a mess of the chain...

We'll powder coat the Chain Too . Gold Plateings a bit expensive at the moment . :|

Hopefully this week I canget the cases in the milling machine.

just what are you going to do to those case's???

Breather valve and My quick change bearing kit and LH cam needle bearing mod. If it's good enough for NASCAR.... And I have a few cams I want to try, so it will make it easier.

As for the oil tank, it's all done. I thought about removing the bottom, but I reinforced it instead. I can always do more later.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

LH case is done, RH is in the mill.
Here's the LH in the mill

Turned out well.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Rh side done, also got my breather valve done. I welded on a spigot for now, I have plans for the mag mount later and did not want to mess with it for now.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

The day has arrived, I have started to assemble the engine. All buttoned up to the head. Quick change bearing and LH needle bearing are working a treat. I installed the cam AFTER I assembled the cases, NICE!!!! I have 4 cams to tryout someday, this will be helpful. Here are some pictures of the progress. Lots of cleaning, polishing, painting, powdercoating, thread chasing, loctite and antiseize. Now to hoist the lump into the frame. Then on to head work.

the next question is will you use it on the head bolts  looks good so far but don't expect much change in power out put if you leave the compression at the stock level if you use a longer duration cam. the extended timing events lower cylinder pressure at lower RPM'S . if I was to keep a low compression motor I would rather see an increase in lift not duration.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

I wil be POURING loctite on everything  If a little is good more is better, right?

heck go for the gusto and use the green, blue is for girl'y men and red is just to gay  dont forget the far east amal carbs or was that east europe and points Ign. so you can have a reliable bike.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

I'll have to track down the super dooper high strength stuff I used to use on the airplanes, made the green stuff look like bubble gum.

if you still have some you might want to seal every thing with the pucky that is used on the helicopter gearbox's as insurance.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

I have a gallon of Hysol EA9309 and a gallon of abladable fan blade liner that I could incorporate somehow.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Re: Red crankcases. I know it's been mentioned before but I couldn't find it. What is it and what is is supposed to do?

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

It's glyptol, seals the porous inside. It's an old hot rodding trick I just had to try. It drives some guys nuts.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Is the metallurgy of the Norton so bad that the inside surfaces need sealing?

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

I don't think so, it's just something I wanted to do.

Amend Windy for understanding and correctly stating some CR vs cam facts of life. Low CR + long duration = poor starts, poor idle and poor power and response. 850 castings are infamous for being porous especially the heads at top. Each cam and stack height alteration for CR changes also implies diddling push rod lenghts to get centered rocker geometry. Try to get to sleep tonight w/o thinking how to make us adjustable push rods : )

The vertical oriented engine fasteners don't get loose by twisting they stretch and gaskets and seam goop get crushed so clamp force lost. Locking-gluing these up does nothing but interfere with the needed bolt break loose and re-torque after a few heat cycles. Engine cradle nuts do get loose too and deserve some glue after over riding the manual torque levels as usually required at top too.

it was said in jest about a certain poster that he did it and the thread on a build he is doing that is now locked.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Buttoned up the transmission today and got the primary assembled. My 40mm belt drive fits nicely inside my repaired 1969 commando primary. I kind of like the extra pointyness. There was a 2 " hole just forward of the clutch inspection hole. I still need to do some more polishing on it.
Now on to machining a ner alternator rotor nut, rocker spindle spacers and plugs for the head oil lines, my spindle covers incorporate a line mount and central shaft oiling.
