Norton 99 ss cylinder/ piston

Hi, I had found a tatty 99 ss engine with , nice cases and crank , good alloy head (needs attention), but the cylinder had broken fins and is rusty , it seemed to be at the bore limit so here is my question , as the cylinders are a bit hard to find , either relining (bit expansive , for an engine I had no use , it's just to not let it dismantled and lying around on the ground !!) , or find a nother pair of pistons suitable in the 69/70 mm bore range , am I stupid ? or ..........worst !

Fins can be repaired, and the bore brought back to maximum oversize by nickel plating followed by diamond hone.

Finding a shop to do the work may be difficult, and it will not be cheap either.

Best solution is to shop for barrels...... with luck you may turn up something with good fins and only +20 over.

You could contact LA Sleeve and see if they have a sleeve to fit. Order up a set of standard pistons and send both the pistons and cylinders to them for fitting. I did that with my 55 AJS.

Only you can decide if you want to retain these old barrels, if you order a pair of second hand items you may not be much better off.

Look carefully at the barrels, there may be already a pair of liners inserted in them; you’ll have to clean the rust off the top and around the bottom to see it. It would be just a matter of cleaning the barrels up and inserting new liners, the outside rust can be sandblasted off, but check first the valve /camshaft blocks are serviceable and not worn in the barrels. Fins can be repaired by an expert and I do mean an expert, it is not something I would attempt myself .
