Bike now has an MOT, taken a bit longer than expected but that's ok. Thanks Les for the help with electrics.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Saturday morning at the bike shop picking up the 70 bike... I realised that taking the mickey out of the MOT testers drumming ability doesn't get your bike fixed, well at least she's back home.

Ginger Baker , Ringo Starr and Jimmy Morton drummers of different talents however I doubt if Ginger and Ringo have ever won a clubman class at the classic TT.

Looking for stainless mudguards and the old seat recovered tracker style, going to get a dent puller kit for the two small dings on the tank and do the engine at the back end of the year.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Sent the old seat pan off to Kircauldy to get covered going bratrodtrackerhopper with a hint of cinnamon,

Got the dent puller giving it a go tomorrow and give the fuel tank a clean out hopefully I won't have to line the inside

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Took the 68 Bonnie for a wee run, the bike ran ok but the clutch was bad.

Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain......

The clutch pack came out in a one-er stuck fast and as you can see hub badly grooved, should I be changing the springs ? One other thing ..........

Happy days.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

I've historically had very little luck getting the standard Triumph clutch to work properly without dragging, but finally got there...

I replaced all the components on my T140 clutch a few years ago, as along with the notching on the outside of the hub, the inside gets badly worn where the shock absorber spider rubs against the face plates.
I must say I've never seen the wear pattern like yours before; mine have always been notched on the spline grooves only.

The springs themselves shouldn't be an issue, unless they're not strong enough.

The standard pressed steel pressure plate is also barely fit for purpose - I went through the local spares dealer's entire stock to try and find one which was actually flat and failed.
It's easy to see if this is warped when setting the spring tension. Mine was all over the place :(
The solution was an SRM alloy pressure plate, which is infinitely superior, and got my clutch working properly, although it was a bit heavy to prevent slip.

I finally fitted a Burton Bike Bits belt drive to mine, and it came with a set of alloy friction plates which put an additional one in the stack - once I fitted this I had a great clutch; a lot lighter and no slip.
But it still sticks if it's been stood for a few months, so back to the traditional kicking over with the clutch pulled in to free the bl***dy thing off before every ride

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Cheers for that Andy, don't know much at all about Bonnies but it can't be difficult to make the usuall balls ups!!
Ordered a new clutch centre complete drum seems ok, no doubt I will encounter the problems mentioned above but I could live with that.

Fitting new petcocks and see what the carbs are like apparently it was running on Avgas , I may just stick it back together as is if the parts don't come before Easter and see how it is. I am still awaiting a reply from DVLA with a reg number they say ten days but probably longer with Easter and all, just have to wait and see.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Great stuff on Saturday morning post, the DVLA have come up with the goodies. Less than ten days and the V5 came through , she is now my UK registered Bonnie. Reg number is a bit uninspiring .

Got that plate just to get something on the bike they could not do silver and black, but will get that sorted out whenever.

Clutch parts arrived and I will try to fit the today but I am a bit slow today commando run out of fuel last night and was Baltic waiting for the RAC with fuel. On the upside the LED headlight was "brilliant " to say the least.

Only thing that peed me off was I did not get the American title back fron DVLA, bugger!!

Chain temporarily on but still have to properly fix the chain guard.

Has anyone ordered any triumph parts from Germany , I was told you cannot get SS mudguards new in the UK but Joe from NVT said they have left him today , high hopes for good times.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Progress is a bit slow found a few minor cracks on cleaning up the timing cover.

Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain......

The chain guard has been a bit of a nightmare it has been straightened and now has clearance between wheel and chain, but it needs the bracket on the skirt replaced and other parts of which I don't know what they look like or even the part numbers, can't see any reference in the workshop manual covering the guard with the skirt. Spoke to Skye calassic guy and he seems to know what parts are required .

Made up a new number plate , adhesive with an ally mount with rubbers and hopefully that will eleveate the stress on the mudguard, as it has had several large splits and holes welded up. Not what I had hoped for looks wise but if it does the job hey ho.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

I have had little time to work on the bike but have managed to get the chain guard sorted, bit of a palaver which was of my own making for not buying a 68 parts book. It is now clearing wheel and chain but I can understand why they moved to a smaller design.

S/S mudguards arrived and I am happy with them, costly but look the part.

Ha Ha!!

Just back from Snnnuffolk and met a bloke with a you guessed it but his had the small rectangular rear light and the slim chain guard Is that the uk 68? Second one I've seen like that recently.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

68 US spec had the larger rear light housing with red reflectors on either side.

I know nowt about slimmer chain guards...

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Still plenty to do but I hope to have her on the road for Saturday's show at Ayr, meeting up with some members from TOMCC Glasgow .

Maybe the chain guards have just been changed for the later type for ease of installation , only a guess, anyway don't really give two hoots .....just curious.

Bike in current condition. Tank threads done ,new taps on, headers back on . Drive chain to fit, drop in fuel , rear wheel jiggly jiggy and pop the exhausts on plus tighten some nuts and bolts and see if she will start.! This seems to have taken forever to do..

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Today's the day the teddy bears have their picks nicked. She is almost ready for a start up and a wee run to see if we are good to go! I really want to ride this bike to a few events so fingers crossed , it's been too long for work that should have only taken a few nights if I had the parts, knowledge and no distractions.
