After many wasted hours, discovered that the lobes on the ring in which points operate were different heights !!!

Could anyone point me at a forum discussion on these old critters?

I'm leaning toward keeping/rebuilding/acquiring "new" K2FC to sorta keep everything in the same relative time period, though I would be interested in hearing about modern upgrades/replacements/after-markets.....
 
If you go for replacement go a new Joe Hunt, 4 rare earth magnets, very hot spark, reliable and parts are easy to order if need too, I run a Joe Hunt on my Harris built 650 Thunderbird for 9 years without any problems and lots of mile and I run a new Joe Hunt on my 850, its been on now for 2/12 years now without any problems and starts first kick every time.

Try search here ( theres a link to components suppliers ) or google .

really a fitters job , overhauling one . Now, if youve a steady hand , use a small oil stone to match both cam / points , to match .
Generally a 45 minute job to set points exactly on both cylinders the same . Identical opening . May dig out the link . :?

Heres the SR2 lucas , of the G45 & Pocipine AMC racers .

K2FC Mags.....


you can flog a SR4 of a Massey Furgeson & convert to SR2 .

Joe Hunt is similar , both rotateing magnet , which removes ' Issues ' .

Thanks for the info, hadn't considered a Hunt product, been out of touch for forever, didn't realize they do British compatible mags.

That looks like it may be a better long term solution. There is also a hint of future interchangeability which could come in handy.

Any opinions or actual test stats compared to the Norvil or SRM units ?

Thanx Matt, both these would avoid external appearance changes too, but I'm not sure how far I want to go to keep original looks.

How do the stats compare, SR2 vs. Hunt ?
 
No need to replace it. There are a only a handful of people who can rebuild these and do a good job. Wire insulation and capacitor technology are much better nowadays. Try contacting Doug Wood at dougwood at netzero dot net or call him at 610-369-7855 (near Boyertown PA, USA). He can also remagnetize them. Very experienced.

Yes , a good stock one is no trouble .

pre 56 the bearing , 32 here , was smaller bore , so the brass end of armature was smaller - where the steel shaft with the taper for the drive cog pressed in .
The thinner brass sheared with light flywheel snappy race engines. So 56 the fitted a bigger bearing , 7 the brass is thicker .

5.000 year old condensors could be a worry . Shaken heated windings in armature are the other problem .

If theres no endfloat in the shaft , or radial slack . AND the Slip Ring isnt worn. ( where the plug lead pick ups go in the sides . Should be constant Dia )
Worn theres dips approaching the brass sector .

One of these nice sub 10.000 mile Bikes mag would be first class .

STARTING . Had a exhausted heap of beings in a Circle around the Bonneville . Correct proceedure & it started stright of , ( Fuel , draw through ,
place starter & LEAP ) Its gotta be swung through - rich / damp but not really wet . Two Comps will prime cylinders . sfa throttle & catch ( quick )
below 1/4 throttle . Open to much and itll die . Cold .

Hot & heat soak once , got chuff whizz, & went to step off . The opened throttle caught . Instantaeneous RPMs with Steves Mother between pipes
& shop window . :oops: :shock: . Can pay to ' clear ' rear before fireing .

Auto advance preferable . or both auto & manual . Manual is ok for a race bike , or pre war single slow reving thing .

Hunt Mag. should have a BIG spark . Some turkey recond a SR2 through a two or three inch spark at 10.000 , on the bench . kept growing with revs.
 
There is one thing and one thing only that is important when using a Lucas K2F mag, and that is that the points open exactly 180 degrees apart, you can only check this with a timing disc and 12v battery & bulb. Failure to do so WILL result in eating pistons, depending on how far out the above is.
I have come across these as much as 20 degrees out, and, with a brand NEW Lucas K2F cam ring, puchased in the 1960s, the cams lobes were 4.5 degrees out :!:
