Just a word of caution for those in the UK
The deer population are pretty much out of control
Estimated 2 million in the UK now
40,000 road accidents a year involving deer
Out for a ride yesterday 15 noisy motorcycles didn't put them off we had some trotting up the road next to us
I had one jump a hedge in front of me at night when I was on my commando
My mate had a Heard of over 200 pass his house
Be careful out there

Deer oh deer

In February my nephew (22) was driving with his friend (19) in his car.

A deer ran out, he unsuccessfully swerved to miss the deer, left the road and hit a tree.

Nephew and his friend (in the prime of their lives) plus the deer, did not survive.

So its best no one starts harping on here about the cruelty of controlled culling of these pests.

I strongly suggest that ‘out of control’ is NOT an adequate description. It’s f***ing ridiculous and a dereliction of duty of those supposedly in charge of such policies.

One of the problems being we are a very small country to be having that amount of deer despite culling 350,000 per year

Similar problems with deer here as well , more deer living in our small town than people … nobody seems to have answers , mean while some fools continue to feed them or grow gardens for them to graze in … an epidemic of stupidity ….

Seems you don't have enough foxes in the UK.
Law of unintended consequences strikes again. Fox hunting by hounds was banned some years ago, as a result farmers switched to marksmen shooting foxes. This has been much more efficient and in rural area's the Fox numbers are dropping. Hunting by hounds weeded out the old foxes leaving the fit ones to continue as they were fast enough to run away. Now fit Foxes are being killed, killing by hounds is cruel but after you have seen the result of a single fox getting amongst some hens you change your mind. Speaking as an urbanite turned rural the countryside does not need any interfering urbanites telling them what's best for the countryside as they have no idea.

As it is urban fox numbers are booming and the urbanites have yet to come up with a solution, wonder why.

That may well be true in Sweden , I rarely see fox or coyote in our town , if spotted town has a guy that makes them disappear 😉, deer are hit regular by vehicles , they have now learned to stay on sidewalks and check traffic before crossing in downtown commercial area … I believe if dogs were running free ( old days) we would have few problems with the deer & raccoon in our town … as boy growing up here only deer ever seen in town were on roof of cars during the hunt season , now hunters keep kills out of sight as they would suffer repercussions from do goodies, just sayin ….

I know a motorcyclist who spent 7 months in medical rehab/repair after hitting a deer.
A year later he got back on the bike and within a month hit another deer...on the same stretch of road...at night.
This time he lost his life.

Deer hunting is a big deal in the US. Population control. Processing is supplemented in many states by the auto insurance industry. A LOT of protein for the needy and hungry.
Of course in the suburbs some choose to feed the deer...every day. They loose their fear of humans very quickly. A 3 year old buck with big antlers and weighing in at 150+ lbs. with no fear of humans is a dangerous animal, especially during the rut.
In my state they have a controlled hunt in the suburbs and parks, archery gear only, to help manage deer populations.
Those who grew up believing Bambi was a true story managed, for one year only, to trap and move the poor little Bambis. Those animals that were trapped suffered a 80%+ mortality rate.
That ended that.

Yes, we also have a managed deer hunt in town , protein goes to food banks the hides, antlers etc. to local aboriginal Band on outskirts of town , the inards to local Agricultural College for study , last year they bagged 20 ,day they released hunt results , I counted one group of 18 very relaxed deer in my back quarter acre …. I use electric fence to protect veg. garden , but still lots of damage, daily ….

You Brits do know they taste good? Myself and a few experienced hunting partners could come over and help. It could be a full time job by the sounds if things!

I spent my last few working years in the venison/game trade...

Tried to convince the boss he should market: 'Bambi Burgers' but he wouldn't have it....
What happens to all the deer meat?
Google says there's a massive drop in demand for it

they arent -that- tasty. Someone bought some muntjac to a BBQ a while ago. He had marinated it for some time, but it was as tough as old boots.

When I travel through the states on my bike, I will always stop before sun set either campground or Hotel if its raining and leave to go onward after 9 am. That's when deer are most active.

A mate of mine hit a goat on his 1000cc
T160 Trident years ago....it made a real mess of his face (still visible today) and his newly commissioned bike 🐐
Hunting in NZ is very popular and has kept the numbers at a controllable level

Here in NJ there is a township near the state capital that is extremely wealthy and exclusive
( home to an Ivy League university ). Bambi lovers imposed a ban on hunting. Didn’t take long to rescind that ban after all the exotic expensive automobiles were hitting deer and all the expensive shrubbery around the mansions was getting chewed to bits .

Come to Australia we have over 40 million + kangaroos double our population we also have deer, emu's, cattle, boars and everything that want to jump out in front of us and night times the worst why do you think all 4x4s and semi trucks have big bull bars on the front, give some protection.
Roo meat is one of the most tender and low colisrole lowing low fat meat around but mention culling and the goody two shoe get up in arms, animal rights people OS crack it but really they have no idea how over populated they are.
Then you get the big red kangaroos they stand 7 foot tall and built like a brick sh#t house, roos feed on the side of roads at dask and dawn for the best grasses, I even seen them grazing in our local suburbs but they are a bit more shy.
Never drive at night on outback roads unless you are hunting them.
