Commando in Context.

for everyone that doesnt land on their head , when they fall off , the comparison is irrelevant , perhaps .Obviously a shit stirr ispired Yamahaski ring dingle incompetant .
Wjat was it your Triumph 500 Engine Did . what did the engine builder use for Lubrication . Was he ever unlubricted . Is steet raceing ' good fun ' .

Matt, you ol` crack-up, does ex-postfacto editing equate with regurgitation in your zeitgeist?
& have a closer look...That bloody great lump of a Z1 - is poured into[&virtually overflowing from] a factory Kawasaki [H2R] fairing...

You two have past history to blow through but annoying in public. I cut teeth on 2 smoke water craft that would ride on one prop blade being slapped so fast down it lifted the ass end, But my real joy with a real job was big block 4 stroke jet boat.

Yep, Hobot, them lazy big-assed 4Ts need juicin` up or pumpin` up [or both] to make `em do any useful work, something Matt might even find rewarding enough to get himself a bike, instead of reiterating ancient fantasies.

Hello James . KELVINATOR HERE . We hear the Eskimos are short of FRIDGES .

Our statistitions anticipate a huge market , We might have a Job for YOU .

Earlier in the race, the Yamaha TX75Os had made an embarrassing debut. By twelve o’clock Toombs/Hinton, Hindle/Knight and Hattonl Spooner had all retired with mechanical woes. The TX never recovered from the publicity and faded from the showroom within 12 months.

Len Atlee’s Norton Interstate ran out of brakes and crashed after one-and-a-half hours. The eight laps lost in the pits was the exact distance Len lost by at the finish.

See Above .

Out of intrest  I thought Id look to see if any STANDARD ( air Cooled ) RD 350s set and speed / distance records . No Luck .
Perhaps a Yamaha entusiast can enlighten us if any CERTIFED STANARD road spec air cooled RDs DID set any RECORDS . :? 8)

Go Gettum .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O--sqoaxgMo :?

Matt, if you could open the other eye for a moment, you`d see that there were NO RD 350s entered in `72, since they were no on sale yet... However if you have a look at the `74 race, tell us what won the 500 class, & how many laps it covered compared to Atlee's Bonneville..
Are you going to spin us the line that Dunstall`s bike were bog-stock too? The F 750 Kawasaki triple that raised Dunstall`s 10km record by over 20mph was in the same category, that is, run what you brung - if it measures 750cc...

Matt, check that `75 6hr race report, "Willing lapped almost the entire field..." riding what?

Matt, did you ever take your Commando for a strop down the measured/certified 1/4 mile?

A "Plate of shrimp" moment?
Cycle World Oct `12 edition has published a letter from Bob Yacenda, co-tuner of the Commando [semi-Combat?] as tested in that Dec `72 Cycle Superbike showdown-[but he doesn`t spill the beans on the 2S/SS cam, damn it].

Anyone [forum member]from California know ol` Bob Yacenda, & could ask him about the story of that `72 test Combat?

Classic Bike mag July `12 P.84; An interesting feature on a well fettled `71 Roadster in metal flake blue, -gives suggestions re optimising Commando practicality[including use of an adapted Jaguar car cam chain tensioner].

Curious coincidence dept...
`72 Cycle roadtest Commando dyno`d @ 49.7 rwhp/6574 rpm
`12 MX Action KTM 250XC [stocker] did 49.8 rwhp/ 8350 rpm.
Of course, X 3 cubes makes power at different rpms, but would any of you guys like to ride a 150hp Commando?
@ 4,000 rpm- 28 hp vs 18,
@ 5,000 rpm- 38 hp vs 22,
@ 6,000 rpm- 46 hp vs 32,
@ 7,000 rpm- 44 hp vs 39,
@ 8,000 rpm- ... hp vs 48.
@ 9,000 rpm-....hp vs 44.

In Jul/Aug `12 Classic Racer is an interesting article about Jim Lee, who did the racing Commmando spine frame for Dunstall, gives figures of 72hp & 309lb, pictures show the mill hanging very low, with the crank centre way below axle line, action shot shows the cases as only inches from the deck on hard braking.

More from Phil Schilling's `74 book 'The Motorcycle World' Re Commando/Brit bikes.

"Norton, which rushed out the Commando just before multicylinder motorcycles began appearing, might be excused - in the name of survival - for sticking with Bert Hopwood's engine & the past; Norton had to do something, & quick, just to continue making motorcycles...
The Japanese would never have bothered with the innovation.
As hard-nosed engineers, they dealt with problems at their source. The Japanese would have discarded the Norton in an instant. The British adapted...
One body of motorcyclists wanted motorcycles that shouted 'classic machine'; they regarded Japanese motorcycles as too slick, too refined, too civilised. For them, the old bits & pieces British approach had an attraction; one could grasp how a component was literally pieced together... Given the chance, the traditionalist might construct a motorcycle in the same way as British factories. The psychic distance between those who built British motorcycles & those who bought them was short."
