I have a primary cover that I would like to use in an Atlas project. My question concerns the primary chain inspection cover retainer that pivots off and on the inspection cover. Specifically, I would like to know how it is mounted to the primary cover. The cover I have has the retainer mounted to the cover with what looks like a rivet on the forward side but on the rear side there is a boss with a hole that penetrates all the way through to the inside. Is this rear fastening point originally another rivet?

Thanks,
Ed

What kind of primary are you trying to build? Slimline featherbed? Norton Heavy Twin?
I have a half dozen slimline twin covers and all have 2 (chrome plated) compound shaped posts that have been peened in place. They retain an internal oil baffle in place. Externally the forward post holds the swing bar that swings & clips over the round hole cover. The swing bar clips into the rear post.
Yours sounds not original to atlas/slimline. Might be very early version or modified.

Thanks for the reply Dave. This is for an Atlas build. The cover I have seems to be as you describe except I think the rear post has been damaged or modified. The post is there but it has a hole through the center and there is nothing there for the swing bar to hook onto. Can you describe in more detail what the swing bar hooks onto or ,better yet, a photo?

It would have to be a dimensioned engineering sketch.
It could easily be lathed up out of a 2" piece of maybe 3/8 stainless rod and peened into place.
pictures worth a thousand words and I hate to type  gota fax?

Working from memory (I am not with my Atlas), the post the swing bar latches onto is very similar in diameter and length as the post the swing bar pivots on. The latch post has a cannelure, or circumferential groove near the outer end that accepts the slot of the swing bar. The height of the cannelure from the cover is the same as the height of the swing bar from the cover. As Dave says, the post is peened into the primary cover.

C'mon guys, this is not rocket science !

Inside, both posts have simply been peened over to hold them there, as said.

Thank you Dave, Slick and Rohan. Rohan, the photo tells me all I need to know and verifies Slicks memory about the cannelure.
