A question about the Interstate left side cover

I have a set of fiberglass side covers for an Interstate. The right one (oil tank side) is correct but I can't figure out about the left side. Instead of having the two holes that accept the rubber bushes for the two pins welded to the frame, it has only one hole on the back wall of the cover. That is not so bad. The part that puzzles me the most is a recessed area with an appx. 3/8 hole on the face of the cover in the bottom right corner. This side cover is the basic shape of the Interstate side cover. I just don't see an Interstate left side cover with a recess and hole on its face. I have checked parts books, brochures and ads. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks.

I've seen some like that and always wondered what year/model they came from, as well.. I'll be interested in seeing where this thread takes you. Good luck!

A question about the Interstate left side cover

Well, sorry, this is the best I can do. In the large photo, the part I want to show is being cut off. Photobucket won't let me size it down so I'm using the thumbnail view.

I've wondered why these type sidecovers show that recess ?
The 850 parts list doesn't show any such recess for the 850 models.
Maybe its something the 750 models used. ?

The big pic you posted has all the photo, it just doesn't show it all on screen.
You can view it separately or save and view it.

The parts book pic shows the two holes at the back to locate it, and the metal strap on the front with Dzus fastener.

Tough part to find, the oil tank side is easy by comparison.
The question is, where are these bikes still being made new getting them ?

P.S. Beautiful black paint.
And with the correct (for 850) twin gold pinstripes, equally sized.

I have a 1974 850 Mk2A with side covers exactly as shown on your photos. The single hole at the rear is for location of a 'peg' attached to the frame under the seat. The hole at the bottom of the cover is for a screw that locates into a threaded 'clip' also on the frame. The combination of these two items holds the side cover in place.

HtH

How interesting - the plot thickens.
Where precisely is this "clip" on the frame located or connected to ?
Part of rthe battery carrier ?

So there is nothing at the front of the sidecover to hold it on or locate it

Do you still have the dzus fastener thingy up high at the front, unused perhaps .
In behind the frame tubes on that gusset plate.

I wonder if this is a modification or improvement to prevent sidecovers just disappearing .
Sometime after the parts books and brochures were printed... ?
Anyone buy a new bike with this ?

You have 'jogged' my memory - there is an additional hole in the front top of the side cover into which a vertical 'peg' mounted on the ignition switch bracket locates. The screw at the rear bottom is a plain large self-tapper (I'm sure this is not original but is how the bike arrived with me 22 years ago!) - it works fine - - the screw fits into the self-tapper 'clip' fitted to part of the frame.

That cover is specific to the 850A models only (those with the large black plastic airbox).
The ignition switch bracket has a vertical peg, fitting into a grommet in the top face of the panel; there's another peg/grommet at the upper rear side face, and theres a black plastic 1/4 turn fastener in the recessed part of the panel. The mating part of that fastener is in a bracket on the battery tray. This is not the same fastener as used on very early Fastback or Type R's.
The 850 Mk111 had a different arrangement, although the panel recess is still there but without the hole for the fastener. The Mk111 arrangement puts the fastener under the seat and more secure, allegedly.

I expect the 064067 retainer[16] is supposed to go inside the cover-to prevent the fastener from dropping out, and not on the outside as it's drawn.

Go to Photobucket and "mouse over" the photo and select Edit from the photo menu-which should open the photo for editing.

Select Resize and use the resizing tools to reduce the image size to below 1000 pixels wide.

Select Apply

Then, at the bottom of the page, select Replace Original (if you select Save a Copy you would have to post the new image URL).

Most informative !!! Figured that some folks on the forum could help out here. When you get that left (primary) side cover mounted, will you post some pics on how it's done ... and the parts needed ? The more I look at my bike with the Interstate tank and Roadster side covers ... the more I want to change to Interstate side covers. This could be very useful in formation. Cheers.

I knew I'd talk you into it eventually! :D

Jordan, yes ya did ... I figure it will be easy to match the covers as my current Interstate tank is black. Just need to find an Interstate sidecover set at "reasonable" (gulp) price on fleabay. Might take awhile though, eh ? (Only reason I sold this set was to buy a Roadster set from Brent in "Fireflake Royal Blue", luv those gaudy metalflake 70's period colors ! )

Back to the thread though, I WOULD RECOMMEND not using the "zues" fastners for Roadster; and Interstate sidecovers as well .... period. The zues coming undone at the front is why so many Commandos lost the left side cover !!! (Happened to me even, a beautiful left side cover in "candy apple red". Zues fastner came undone (surprise!) ... and then the car behind me "ran over" my sidecover that had just fallen off ! BTW, all the scratches it had on it from falling off before; were now irrelevent.) Another fine example of Norton "quality enginnering", or lack thereof ... Finally learned my lesson though.

Anyway, since then I always use a 1/4 x 20 stainless steel bolt with nylon lock nut to hold the left sidecover on, never lost one since. Trust me as one who knows ... don't trust those zues fasteners !!! ( not without safety wire anyway ...)

As a final note, though they don't use zues fasteners (just plastic tabs) many, many, MANY, 1970s Honda left sidecovers suffered the same fate as the Norton left sidecovers, i.e. falling off while riding, then damaged, lost, ran over, or lost in a time space worm hole ... just like socks go a missing' in the dryer !!!

Dzus fasteners work great as long as you lock them in place. I have never had one come loose or heard of one coming loose and think the odds of the owner not properly fastening them are greater than one failing.

I've GOT to see this new paint when it's done. And I'll keep an eye out for some new covers for you. :)

LAB, I'm trying to figure out how the bracket in the first diagram you posted actually works with the side cover. The side cover does have a hole facing the ceiling and towards the front of that top face. Would you think that this hole is to use that stud sticking up from the elbow in the diagram? That would make sense except the stud seems to be to the rear of the cover unless I have it all wrong and the bracket sits past the cover to the front of it. I don't have the air box (running a single Mukuni) but could rig something for the bracket to attach to. I am just trying to be sure I understand how the parts you posted connect to the cover. Thanks for your help on this.

Yes on my MK2A it does exactly that, I will try to post a pic tomorrow when I charge the battery to show you plus try to show where you need to place the bracket as mine is fitted to the plastic airbox still.
