Anyone know the correct size of the front tank bolt? Left side fell out while riding I searched on here but didn't find a discussion on it.

Not sure which year model you have, but be careful not to over tighten - if the fixing in the tank breaks free and starts to rotate it can be a pain to fix I believe.

It's a bat shit crazy extra large headed m6 shoulder bolt. I've searched endlessly to match them up like for like, but no joy. Just the other week I got in touch with the main fastener supplier to Norton, but by all accounts they don't show it as a stock bolt so needs manufacturing as a special order...see the attached quotation.

There's no way SG would have paid those sort of prices for a fuel tank bolt...so I'll keep hunting.

What you are looking for a Metric Extra-Wide Flanged Button Head Screw (the stock widest head is 16.7mm) or you can use a Stainless Steel Dome Head Bolt

And as a repair/replacement, we have done both options

You can use a bolt or screw of your choice, and the washer found here

Part number 94709A119 has a 1 inch OD and the rubber backing with a touch purple loctite works wonders. Dont use loctite at first only if the screw doesn't stay in. I found that the rubber washer puts pressure on the screw and doesn't back out in most cases.

The other is https://www.mcmaster.com/95608A128/ which works great as well. 16mm length might not work for you it all depends on the space between the tank and mount and if you put some rubber between them

Then its up to you to determine screw length as I have found some might be a little tighter than other. AND PLEASE LISTEN to the caution above about torque. Its only hand tight not wrench it tight.

Sorry should have stated - 2016 961 mk2. Yes I heard about the over tightening which is why I probably under tightened the bolt and why its now missing lol.

VIRAJ did other hardware on the bike; any chance they would have supplied them?

The 961 uses a 21mm wide head, with the important shoulder width being a very wide 10mm.

Hey Stu

Sorry I should’ve clarified my post what I meant was that most bolts suppliers only stock 16.7 wide as standard for that type of screw and you are correct about the width of the Norton bolt size.

If you click on the link for McMaster you will see the varying widths but it does not get up to 21 in a 6 mm

Yeah thats what I mean by bat shit crazy...its the sizing. I cant find anything the same, anywhere. What's annoying it, I had been giving them out like sweets to anyone missing one. Even nicked all the ones that I'd used on my 7r track bikes single seat conversion, and my RS125 fairing...thinking nah it'll be fine, I'll get some more back in stock. I've only recently started charging for them, when I realised actually they're pretty special. Damn it.

I’ve jettisoned at least five tank bolts over the last year. Trial and error with bolt type and torque - by torque I mean hand tight only, with 1/3 of an (almost) grunt applied. Check it part way through the next ride and tighten slightly if it’s showing signs of backing out.

Security appears to be more a function of bolt tightness than type (although linked of course), as long as it has a largish head and/or washer. Could be wrong though - often am!

Eventually settled on these dome headed screws with a sizeable washer from the local hardware store. This one’s been in place for a few months now.

Wonder whether Birmingham re-engineered this setup?

The bolt head has the large shoulder to allow the actual clamping of the tank to the battery box, whilst allowing the splash matt to move fairly freely ie the matt is not squashed down by the bolt.
Brummie Norton have now totally revised the battery box, including different fixings

Yeah, that’s pretty interesting - I’d like a look at one.

Has anyone tried purple (222) loctite on these bolts?
Weakest Loctite, but good protection from vibration, and can be undone easily.

A stud (long set screws) would be a better idea in the plastic tank. Then use a machined flange washer and nut.

Just never paid attention whether or not if having studs in the tank would allow the room for installation and removal.

One could install the studs (long stainless set screws) once the tank is placed on the bike.

A stud would help prevent thread pullout of the tank.

Dunno mate. I'll let you know when I get one in. Their battery box won't work on a Donington bike though....not unless you want to take your top yoke off each time you want to remove your tank.

Thought they addressed that ?

It’s odd that they even changed that and never noticed it before the bikes leaving the factory.
