EV cars have their uses, for short trips within cities they are ideal. But the test to really find out if the stop sell of ICE engines is do EV's work in all situations.

Well no is the answer and it will be no even after the stop sell of ICE.

1. Towing

280 mile range became 95 miles and fitting into a charging slot needed the caravan left elsewhere.

2. Bank holidays and summer rush to beaches

How do you get to the beach when everyone else wants to do the same.

Sitting in a traffic jam on a hot day with the air con full on who is going to tow all the empty battery cars to next charging station.

Once at the motorway service station how big is it going to be to fit in all the required charging slots.
 
I cannot imagine why anyone would want to ride an electric motorcycle. I have a real psychological problem. As soon as the motor of my Seeley 850 fires up, I feel compelled to ride it. Where I live , there used to be a cop across the road - he died. But there is still one around the corner, and the divisional van is often there.

Add to this list:

Farmers / builders etc who drive off grid, in difficult terrain (very power consuming) and are not near charging stations and Costas !

People who live in blocks of flats and don’t have the luxury of parking their car on their drive next to their nice new charging point.

People who want to tour through the Apls, Scottish Highlands, etc.

People who need 24hr certain access to transport (think remote country doctor or vet on call out… “your husband has had a heart attack? Sorry to hear that, I’ll leave in 2 hours when I’ve enough charge”…).

Anyone living in vast open areas, the outback, all of Africa, etc, etc, etc.

Honestly, when you really look at the global picture, EVs are only ideal for a much smaller section of society than is currently being discussed by anyone.

I can't get anywhere near my house to charge a car up
 
To compete with my car it'd have to take 5 minutes or less to fully charge it would need a 550 miles range and cost around £2000
That's the most I've ever paid for a car

What about winter temps effect on battery capacity. esp with heater/defroster in heavy use?

Seems to me kids toys have already solved the slow to recharge issue....when little Johnny's electric car runs down, he just gets Daddy to swap in freshly charge batteries and off he goes again. Surely a full scale vehicle could be engineered with a quick swap out battery setup? Just pull into a swap out station, car stops on an automated swap out device, battery tray is dropped out, freshly charged one lifted into place and away you go. The station would have a stack of batteries being charged around the clock.

I think this is the only way electric vehicles could work

You still have the issue of generating the electricity though

"Generation is key"
Afghanistan has huge Lithium deposits and China is not far away (literally) to become the world leading ev battery supplier....BUT sustainability is a serious question that many experts say is not viable long term.(then what??)
Meanwhile China are building coal fired stations as we speak (guess that's for charging) While the rest of the world are jumping through hoops to appease the Paris climate accord.
To add perspective to the idea of changing out batteries and what it costs to repair faulty power packs.
Technology and infrastructure needs to be greatly improved for this to be a viable proposition...its all been tried before since the 1800's... check this out

Battery performance drops by at least 20% in winter… and that’s when they’re new.

Quick changeover batteries seems very logical to me too. Sadly though, in order to get decent range, manufacturers are ‘forced’ to fit bigger and bigger batteries. They are getting freaking huge!

They are now so big and heavy that they are mounted in huge ‘battery trays’ which are big sealed units which fit under the entire floor of the vehicle and became a structural member of the monocoque chassis.

So… changing them is now a MAJOR job. Think thousands of $.

So, basically, the Industry is going in the opposite direction entirely.

Battery technology is now akin to engine technology. He who develops the best battery wins! I cannot see any way they‘re gonna get to the point where they‘re happy to share and standardise, not for many years to come at least.
 
Petrol has already beaten both Electric and Steam cars once in the early 20th century. It did that with no Govt subsidy, private enterprise provided the petrol stations and made money from selling petrol. The Govt did provide the roads but they could be used by steam and electric cars so that is only an indirect subsidy to petrol.

Any technology that has be adopted by bribery and/or legislation will eventually fail.

Look up Window Tax to see how innate the human is to being told what to do by bureaucrats.

I rode in this 1913 Bailey electric 5 years ago.
Those that think EV's are going to replace ICE, do not understand that "energy cannot be created or destroyed, only change state" and, will NOT participate in any discussion involving power generation, volume of current needed, and what it takes to distribute that amount of current.
Instead, repeating " infrastructure", although not understanding the cost/magnitude.

The part about little Johnny's Dad paying is what's wrong with the whole idea....
Today's 20,30 yo's haven't an accurate concept of cost.
