Gentalmen of the form.
How have you found the fit of aftermarket exhaust parts? Andover, Harris, Emgo?
Any fit better than the others? NOS parts are hard to find . Any suggestions would be welcome.

My exhaust came from RGM - fit very well but chrome on pipes turned gold and blue very quickly.

one of our canadian suppliers dumped me a set of wasell pipes, that did not even come close to fitting the bike.

Andover are arguably not aftermarket, being a continuation of the original.

Regarding exhaust pipes, I have not seen any for a 750 that didn’t require using the 850 Mk3 kick start lever to clear the right side muffler. This has been the case for at least 30 years.

AN are definitely higher quality than Commando Specialties silencers.

Les Harris headers seem good quality. Better than my old Toga.

I have a set of AN headers for my Mk3 the fit is no where near perfect!

Regarding kickstart clearence, Andover sell some clever fabricated ex hanger plates that move the pipes inboard.

I tried them in order to get my rearset linkages as inboard as possible. They work really well, I have them on both sides of the bike:

The silencers moved out further when the additional mounting plate was added to the silencer, they tried to overcome this by making the kickstart shaft longer, and then use a 850 kickstart. The MK3 headers are designed to be used with black cap silencers, not roadster silencers. The end of the pipe is at a slightly different angle for the black caps. if you fit roadster silencers to the MK3 headers you will need either flip your existing mounting plate and drill it so the silencers sit sensibly with the pipe, or make a plate to suit. Some MK3's were supplied with the large awful looking triangle plate that can be flipped and drilled.

I'll probably get shot.... but i didn't think the down pipes that AN now have made follow the original design, as the originals had a "kink" in the pipe at the header that allowed the pipe to hug the frame down tubes & this is one reason why the inboard hanger is required the pull the assembly inboard
I have put on my tin helmet and await the fall out..
Armour downpipes are good quality and fit remarkable well

Pipes are so difficult these days, I’m beginning to think it’s just ‘luck of the drawer’ within normal variation, rather than good supplier / bad supplier.

Olympus praises Armours, but I’ve had them no where near and I’m sure it’s similar for others.

TMS in Nottingham actually stopped selling exhaust pipes cos it was just too much aggro !

Nigel,

You have summed it up perfectly. If a pipe is one degree out at the head it will be a mile off at the silencer. Just buy a set & be prepared to heat & tweek them. If the discolouration bothers you get them replated. The pipes on my 920 came from Mick Hemmings twenty years ago, & whilst they didn't fit properly they were of very good quality, so I heated & tweaked them & have never worried about the heat stained chrome. For my '68 750 I bought a pair of unchromed blanks from Armours & made them fit before sending them to the platers.

Don't think I've ever had a system that fits straight on
Always needs a bit of adjustment

Must have been lucky, just fitted Harris headers from the Bonneville Shop on my Combat and no problem with the fit.

I agree.

I've also found that when people say they don't fit it's often because they (IMHO) don't install them correctly. You need to put everything together loose and hand tighten, then a little shaking is good and making sure the headers are laying along the bike where you want them, then tighten the exhaust nuts more, then make sure the mufflers are aligned like you want them, then tighten the muffler mounts and the exhaust nut and finally the muffler to header clamp. If the header is not in the muffler the perfect amount and straight, it can seem like the headers or mufflers or both are wrong - the perfect amount being whatever it takes.

The best quality Roadster/Peashooter/Non-Balanced headers I've found are from Wassell! The best quality peashooters I've found are also from Wassel, but they are extremely loud. Yes, I know, Wassell, like EMGO has a good bit of poor parts but they also have some quality items as well. For instance, I bought 6 sets of EMGO roadster tanks and side covers and it's well known how good they are, but now they are not available and I need more.

I have a set of Les Harris pipes. The problem I have is the clearance of the left side and the kickstand bolt.It all fits fine until the rose tightens into the head.
Another question
With the bike in proper tune, won’t any chrome exhausts turn color, even after you have them re-plated?Whenever I see a m/c with beautiful chrome pipes all the way to the head, I wonder if it ever gets ridden.
Thanks,
Mike

When the rose is tightened the pipe flange is set against the face in the head and this potentially moves the pipe if the bend is wrong. What I do is retain the MK3 spherical seat even when using flanged headers, this allows the pipe to be moved from a set position and the rose to be tightened. Works well on the right side so the kicker does not foul the pipe. Downside is your rose engages less threads but never had a rose loosen with this setup using bronze roses and tightening the rose when the engine is hot and running.
