I put a new rubber boot and retaining ring on the master cylinder for my front brake yesterday. I did it on the bike, without disturbing the hydraulic side. What I thought would be a pretty simple job was complicated somewhat by the fact that what I expected to be the solid end of the piston turned out to be some sort of loose extension. It wobbled all over, and tried very hard to resist the installation of the new boot – all this while I'm trying to hold it back against the spring inside the master cylinder. I had the master cylinder sleeved down and returned to me assembled with the brake lever many years ago, and this is the first time I've delved in there. I've yet to turn up any related invoice or letter, and I don't recall who did it for me, otherwise I'd ask them, so: does anyone know what might be going on here? Is there anyone in the UK who would've sleeved down a Norton Lockheed master cylinder in such a manner that a loose extension was needed on the end of whatever piston they used, around 17 years ago? I realise that there could be something more sinister going on – but I don't see how the end of the piston could've broken off; the brake's always worked fine since the sleeving; and I've yet to ride the bike since fitting the new boot. That's more about available time than fear of brake failure. I'd just like to understand what this is about, short of dismantling the master cylinder to see ... Cheers.

p.s. In full accordance with Sod's Law, I just found relevant paperwork – the master cylinder was sleeved for me by RGM in July 2000. If anyone has any answers or similar experience please do chime in, but of course now I can just email RGM ...

Aha! Thanks for the lightning-fast response L.A.B. – it's always good to have a rational explanation! I no longer feel wobbly about my wobbly front brake – cheers!
