I have a set of fiberglass side covers the same as a roadster but the word commando is raised about 1/8" so now the decal will not go on and hand paint the gold seams to be the only option.
I bought a replica fibreglass sidecover a while back.
Whoever had done the moulding for it had copied it off an original sidecover - and hadn't peeled off the decals (vinyl) before taking the mould. !!
I just sanded off, in the fibreglass, the raised lettering, and painted it.
If you were careful, you may be able to paint the lettering.
Or find a decal (vinyl) set the exact size, and stick over it.
If the lettering is 1/8 high you could paint the cover and then do the lettering like you would a rubber stamp. Face down against a pad of whatever paint you want the lettering to be. Or sand it off!
Posting the picture sent to me by Greg - roberts1948 - of the sidecover in question. Looks pretty normal to me for 1971 except it doesn't have the 750 part of the decal and the Commando is higher up than normal. Looks perfectly salvageable. The 1971 and early 72 decals were a one piece film which partially fell off in the first 6 months. Later they went to diecut letters so was probably re-decal-ed at some point.
