What can cause poor engine brake?

Finally got the bike in running order, and get to drive a little. 850 -73, Pazon EI, 34mm Mikuni VM single carb, restored engine, RGM belt and dry clutch. Something seems not quite ok when I drive, I have almost no engine brake. The idle is ok, but when driving and shutting the gas, there is almost mo braking, but if I pull the clutch the engine idles directly. What can cause this, grateful for any help!

If your idle speed is set too high then the engine braking will be reduced, I aim for 1100 rpm idle and get good engine braking.

If your idle is at 1100 rpm, I would suggest to check your compression. I think it should be about 150 psi per cylinder if engine is stock

Is your clutch adjusted properly? I would imagine clutch slippage could cause or contribute to the problem you describe.

Some bikes have good engine braking and some don't, and some have very little, if its riding great, feels good then ride it and get use to its quirks, each bike is different and what has been done to it.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious............
The amount of engine brake you get depends in part on what gear you are in.
If you are loping along in 4th at a relatively low rpm, and shut off the gas, you will get way less engine braking as if you were in a lower gear at mid range rpm.
