Sprag Bearing E Start

What could cause the sprag bearing shell to fail? (BTW, it has 23 k miles on it)

On dis-assembly I found the outer shell had 2 small cracks. I know the tolerances for the gears between which the bearing sits are specific, but I am 2 thou to the good.

These things are expensive ($200) & I don't want a new one to fail.

I have been in contact with Matt in CNW. He is working on a new option.
That is a new sealed modern sprag. This option will bee ready in the spring,
so we have to wait some month
