Speedo drive grease

What type of grease should go into the speedo gearbox zerk? I have replaced the stock grease zerk with one that fits standard grease guns.

I just used standard EP grease from a grease gun. Clean it out every 5000 miles and replace the grease. Shouldn't be a problem unless it gets loose or to close to the cover. There have been some good threads on the speedo gear box.

Any grease should be fine - the important thing is that the grease matches what's in there.

Grease is a combination of heavy oil and a soap - the soap keeps the oil in suspension. Different greases use different soap compounds, and may not be compatible with each other. If two incompatible greases are mixed, much of the oil will settle out, leaving a mess.

I have read here that it is better to pack these by hand than to rely on the zerk. FWIW.
