One of the replys to my previous post (about the ride out with modern bikes) the poster asked for photos and details of the SU fitted to my machine

This photo shows the throttle linkage/lever. I was not happy with the angle the throttle cable had to bend when it exited the manifold casting to meet up with the throttle lever so I machined up a pulley type quadrant to fit the lever and also a better form of cable retainer, one that didn't crush the cable.

This photo shows another couple of mods. The bike is fitted with a 3 phase alternator and the previous owner had the Sparx powerbox bolted between the coils. The wiring (by the previous owner/s) could only be described as abysmal i.e. loads of bullet connectors, wiring all the same colour! no loom tape and the headlamp shell full of chocolate block connectors. Yuk!
The sparxs powerbox failed a couple of months ago (it knackered the battery when it failed) so, when fitting a new 3 phase regulator/rectifier from Al Osborn, I found that the units bolt holes matched up to the bolt holes used to fasten the old black plastic air box in place. It makes a real neat installation. The other mod in the photo is an oil reservoir for the swinging arm bearings using a small remote master cylinder reservoir i got from an autojumble for a couple of quid (bucks for our colonial friends)

View from the lefthand side. By happy coincidence i found that the K & N air filter that was fitted to the Mikuni also fitted the SU,s Ram pipe.

Both myself and my son are going to the Classic TT in August so maybe we might see some of you there,

It starts fine, and on the button, when clap cold, full choke start and then immediately reduce choke to an even run. When warm very little/to no choke.
The choice of petrol tap I,m told can alter this happy state of affairs. I have the type of petrol taps that you can see right thru when open (they are of the tapered plug cock variety) like these here
http://www.scottparts.co.uk/index.php?o ... Itemid=493

I think the problem starts when people use the BAP type of petrol tap which are not of the free flow type being more like one fitted to a Jap bike. I also saw that article in Roadholder (The NOC magazine) and it was me asking the question on the NOC website about the primer bulb fitted SU that got the author to write up his article! Interestingly the primer bulb fitted bike had BAP type taps fitted.

I,m considering changing the petrol taps fitted to a different make (as the ones fitted pass slightly, they don,t leak petrol as such they just don't totally shut off) but crucially not of a different type. like these here

These ones are double the price but look to be better made

That was me. Thanks for the extra effort! I don't suppose it'd fit on my existing Mikuni manifold... It's only money.

Dobba99,
Not to get off topic. Is your swing arm oiled from a catch tank? If so, nice hookup.

no the manifold is nothing like the mikuni one ,its the manifold that is hard to get hold of the SU carb is relatively easy and all the parts are readily availiable ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,baz

Baz what model SU carb do you use for this and what is the manifold kit required.
Thanks.

I ran the S.U. kit on my 850 for quite a few years & liked it a lot. Starting was always easy, performance was good & idle (once I dumped the Boyer & fitted a Trispark) was also good. Only topping up the dashpot was a pain. I re fitted the 32mm Concentrics because I missed the grunt at higher revs.

ok the carb is an hif6 the needle is bfd sunzx8052 the spring is red suauc4387 the float needle is suwzx1096 viton tipped 2.4 bore phoenix made the manifold ,good luck getting hold of a manifold might do better to make one cheers baz

So I don't know if this was covered in the other thread where your SU came up but what is the performance really like? I can't imagine it compares at all to dual Amals.

Dull throttle response is reason the hi end SU carbs have an accelerator squinter.
