Hello friends,
Some pics of my first solo motorcycle race with my BMW 900S in production over 750, the circuit was laid out in an army barracks and I finished third, not badly against Kawa 1000, Laverda SFC, Norton Production.
At the time I had been a sidecar passenger for years, after this solo race, I sold the BMW to buy my first sidecar with König engine and start my racing career as pilot, but that's another story...

joke
A Jewish grandmother is at the beach with her grandson David
Little David is playing at the water's edge, when a huge wave sweeps him out to sea.
The Grandmother prays to the Lord: Lord give me back my little David, I have always respected Sabath, I have always eaten Kosher, I have done Yon Kippour, give me back my little David.
A big wave brings David safe and sound to the beach.
The Grandmother: Lord, I wouldn't want to abuse it, but he was wearing a new cap...

Great joke
I just hope Al dosent see that puddin basin !!

I have great admiration for those who can ride the BMW fast. As a youngster, I bought an R90S because Reg Pridmore made it look so easy. Throttle changes made the bike react left or right due to engine torque while at the same time jacking the rear up and down due to the shaft. The bike had more corkscrew than Laguna Seca. I rode it only a few times and sold it.

My mates r100 used jack the suspension
I sorted that for him by hardtailing the frame!
That was over 20 years ago
I own the bike now

I once rode an R69S which had the leading link forks. It was very disconcerting. As I braked, the front seemed to rise, or at least not go down. I think the change of rake on the steering head as you brake and accelerate is important and affects whether you can get around a corner easily and smoothly. Usually as you brake, your bike becomes more stable and as you accelerate the bike oversteers slightly. The BMW I rode did not do that.
As for the torque reaction, I have always liked the big Guzzi V-twins. I was offered a very nice one cheap. I didn't buy it because somebody had been killed while racing it in America.
I think a BMW boxer would be a very pleasant touring bike. At least it would be quiet. I would not like to ride one in anger. It might be easy to crash.
There is a thing about German design. During WW2, the FW190sand Messerscmidts did not seem to lend themselves to mass production, because of the way they were built and the German approach to quality.. In the end, the Japanese seemed to do it better, after the Americans taught them about quality management , they became excellent. The British only ever seemed to to do what they were forced to do. But when the British put their minds to it, they always win. America cannot build a race bike. But who taught the Germans to build the modern BMW racer ?
America has the best production engineers on the planet. Australia cannot even scratch itself.
I think it all has to do with national mindset. Modern quality management theory came out of the UK, during WW2. I know Japanese and German motorcycles are excellent, butt I always prefer British.
Cricket is a very strange game. You have to be a dickhead to play it. I once told an Englishman ' we Australians don't know much about cricket '. He nearly had apoplexy.
'Slow and steady wins the race'. Every motorcycle road racer should ride a Manx Norton at least once in their life.
Have you seen this ? :

It's the first thing I noticed....I knew Yves is a brave guy, but a pudding basin?, in 1976?

They weren't legal with the UK ACU by then. I started in '75 with a Bell full face!

I have some photos of me taken by Guy THONUS, taken in 2017/2018, at Gedinne. I am hoping I might get some taken in 2023!

Dedicated Belgian race photographer who puts a lot of his work out there for free! But I didn't know he has been in the game that long!
