Personal preference I guess
Never had one leak yet and the gasket peels right off
I should add that in the past I became sick of scraping off previous owners baked on red Hermatite
I once bought a pre unit triumph engine that the sump pickup pipe was completely blocked with orange instant gasket
Also I blew up an xs1100 engine the rod seized on the crank and snapped /shattered
It punched a hole out of the cases and cut my shin on its way out
When I dropped the sump the strainer was clogged with shards of what I believe was blue hylomar
This is just my experience of it and used in moderation (as long as it's not the dreadful red) then it's fine

I'm no engineer (my youngest son is - dunno where he got that from!), and I'm not a mechanic either. I'm a pretty slow worker and rather than charge in and cock things up, I'd rather take my time and try and get my head around things. Consequently, you'll find me asking lots of questions when I'm lacking conviction and for that I'll apologize in advance. But I'm really enjoying learning and gaining confidence as I go, and it's all thanks to the fantastic members of this wonderful forum.

I haven't been drinking either. True story.

Questions are much less expensive than mistakes...

Bonzo, your clean up of the outer timing cover is excellent! Well done, good job. Have you checked the cover to see if it circumstantially flat?

Your Norton loves the attention you are giving it, but as you have already noticed, can be very expensive...

The cover isn't going on right now as I need to adjust the slack out of the chain and it will be probably Wednesday before the shaft holding tool, as mentioned by Tornado, from AN arrives - so time yet to lay it on the mirror armed with a feeler gauge.

Appreciate the heads up mate.

The GOOD news is that 518 is an aneroebic sealant, and doesn't cause ANY of the problems you mention. (Take a few minutes, search & read about it).

I don't see where any one has mentioned it - it appears like your timing chain is too loose. You'll need to read up on how to set it properly.
I forgot to mention, when I was adjusting the timing chain tension I noticed that the tensioner was the old plain metal part, and so promptly ordered the later rubber faced one.

Odd that a '74 bike built in late '73 would have the earlier tensioner and if a PO replaced it, one can only wonder why?

Ahh, interesting. I thought they'd moved to rubber faced by then.

Perhaps not so odd after all.

I had it in my head it was rubber-faced from '72.
 
Do you guys pop a dab of grease, silicone spray or lube with oil - these seals (inc oil pump seal) before fitting the cover? (the points seal will get lubed as it goes over the tool)

I'm just picking up on something Greg mentioned about finding the oil seal a pain to seat (#41).
