I'm finally working through the reassembly of my 1965 Norton Atlas but it seems I have misplaced the primary chain. After some research I know it is a #428 (1/2 x 5/16) single row chain with 76 links. Is there any thing special about it? What chain do people use; Regina, Renolds, ?. I vaguely remember one of the INOA newsletters where some one used an o-ring chain and possibly ran dry?

Thanks in advance for any help

Dave

I had an Atlas that lost all the chain case oil on a weekend to Devon and it snapped the single row primary chain twice. I don’t advise to run it “dry” even an O ring one.
Tip
When assembling the chain case cover remove the rubber band and along with the outer chain case & inner case clean with petrol, Acetone and let dry. Then use large amount of silicone sealant on the bottom half inner and outer c/case and assemble.
IMPORTANT :!:
Leave to dry for 72 hours before filling with oil :!:

I used a Renold chain for my P-11 (same clutch as the Atlas, just a shorter chain, 68 v 76 link). At just under 350 - yes, 350 - miles, the chain broke and popped a chunk out the inner and outer primary cases. Detailed analysis of the damage revealed that three plates on the chain were poorly riveted, and one popped off. The primary was repaired by my welder, and I replaced the chain with a D I D gold chain, which also happened to be rated about 50% stronger than the Renold. Its been 9 months and about 1500 miles with no issues.

The D I D chain was about 1/2 the price of the Renold, and is available just about everywhere. It has to be cut, as it comes in 110-130 link lengths, but so what?

I wrote Renold to tell them of the problem, and they expressed 'regret'. Their explanation was that the chain must have been altered by a third party ( BTW, every plate on the chain is stamped with Renold's mark), or it had been improperly installed. I got the impression that Renold felt they had no responsibility in the matter, as they had not sold me the chain directly. I offered to send the chain back to them for analysis, but was informed that wouldn't be necessary. As far as I'm concerned, Renold does not deserve their reputation (as my old man used to say, 'they can go pound salt').

I had a situation recently with a K & N oil filter, where the filter actually sprung a leak through one of the spot welds holding the nut on the end. K & N sent me 2 replacement filters, reimbursed me for the oil change, and sent me a shipping label to mail back the faulty filter for failure analysis. This company deserves their reputation i.e. they stand behind their product and strive to maintain quality.

You should ignore all this poppycock from Renolds, and if you still have the receipt go back to the shop and ask for a full refund as the chain was “not fit for purpose”
