O.k. kids, I want new, high quality gas taps. What size do I need for a standard roadster tank? 1/4" X 1/4" or 3/8" X 3/8" ?

I am thinking of going with these from Pingel:

Not sure if they will work or not as they seem to have a female connector and I am pretty sure I need male to go into the tank.

The original tap threads are 1/4" BSP ("British Standard Pipe" also known as 1/4" GAS) the BSP sizes refer to pipe internal bore diameters and not thread diameters.
So you will need adaptors to fit a different (non-British) type of tap. An adaptor was available for late Triumphs, as they had Paioli taps with metric threads as standard, but these are now getting scarce and may not be the correct metric size anyway. 'BAP' taps (also fitted to Triumphs) are available and work well and need no adaptors. Use the bonded washers between tap nuts and tank to seal the joint properly.

Thanks L.A.B. The Pingel ones are 1/4" NPT or national pipe thread and I am positive they don't make an adapter that goes to BSP thread, just to 3/8" NPT or metric.

Walridge Motors has some nice billet ones and I assume that since they stock them, the taps will fit right in without any need for adapters.

I second the motion for BAP taps. I have installed BAP taps on all my British bikes. They are really good quality and don't leak but some people think they are ugly.

I bought all mine from Art Xanders. He used to sell them on eBay but I haven't seen them lately. He may still have some in stock if you contact him directly. His business is called "Xanders Britikes" and is loacted somewhere in Ohio I think.

Never seen nor heard of BAP taps, and my reasoning for changing is the stock ones are pretty ugly, so maybe BAP is not the answer.

gas taps

check out the billet type from British Bike Connection,www.BritishBikeConnection.com
Good luck. James

BAP taps

Here are what the BAP taps look like

New fuel taps/petcocks.

Try making your own taps. 1/4" ball valves are quite inexpensive and do not leak ever. Buy a pair of 1/4" male / female type and a couple 1/4" bspp male to male brass adapters.
You can de-solder the filters and reserve tube from the old taps and re-solder them on to the brass adapters. Assemble with a little thread goo and that's it.
You should get the lot for less than £10 from any pneumatics supplier.
If anyone is interested I might have a photo handy.

Walridge motors up here in Canada sells them and I have seen them. They are actually cheaper up here than in the US selling for $65 CDN opposed to $65 US from BBS.
