1984 Harley-Davidson Softail/V2 Evolution

The oil-tight engine that saved Harley-Davidson motorcycles

The late 1970s and early 1980s were tumultuous for Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson had been under AMF's ownership since 1969, but in 1981, the management team took the company independent. And after years of relying on the Shovelhead engine, which had its roots in the 1920s, Harley desperately needed an engine that could cope with modern noise reduction and emissions regulations.

John Favill was Harley-Davidson's manager of engine design at that time. He got his start in the motorcycle industry in 1959 with Villiers Engineering, eventually working for Norton where he was instrumental in the development of the Commando. From that experience, he ended up working for Harley-Davidson in the middle of 1979, tasked with the development of the new 1,340cc V2 Evolution engine."
