I have a set of crankcases that I am swapping out this winter(late reinforces and machined to update oil flow and breather). My question is, would it be advantageous to helicoil the drain plug and the inner primary cover mounting threads? This kind of makes sense because this seems to be a weak area and a stainless helicoil would be much stronger and allow for stainless drain plug and stainless fasteners for primary inner.
What would you (the experienced masses) do. In this respect, what else should I take advantage of at this juncture?

Inserts would be good. Use the double thickness inserts like timeserts [sp] not helicoils. Get them with coarse threads on the outside to help the thread strength in the aluminum and glue them in with JB weld. Jim

YES! As Jim says use TimSerts. They are available in Whitworth. I had Ken Canaga place these for Every Fastener in my Ms Peel cases. I figure better as prior preventive and wear/tear, expecting to open and close engine a bunch of times working up power loads and rpm. Ken is current on where to source proper TimeSerts so will ping him if you can't find what ya need on your own.

Helicoils are just a spring like coil, TimeSerts are a solid threaded tube.
