If I had a million dollars.....

Reallly during these times, $10,000,000 would be the starting point. Between the wife's 401k and mine ( which I havent contributed to in 4 years) we have about $400K saved. And we're not to midlife yet. But with the cost of everything rising, when we retire we will be comfortable, but not spend crazy.

So if I had $10 million I would build that large building and start hoarding bikes. He had it right.

Ugh. Fortunately we quit work in 05/06 paid off the mortgage, all the cars, don't owe anyone money and I fired my blood sucking money manager in 08 right after Bear Stearns debacle and socked all our qualified money into Vanguard bond funds. Been making over 6% on it ever since. It's actually been growing pretty good compared to equities.

I just stumbled on this Auction which will be taking place Nov 12th. Treat yourselves to a look of all the motorcycles and stuff for sale. I have no association with this sale at all. Nortons, Vincents, Matchless, Indians.

The way the bidders were throwing around money yesterday, a million dollars didn't go far in this auction. I thought maybe $100 for lot 107...a wall banner plus maybe 30 posters. It went for $1400. Really depressing. It was my first and last auction for brit stuff.

I think stuff goes for more than it's worth at auctions. I tend to stay away from them.

Having followed the literature and old junk part of the auction I told my wife "I am a multi-millionaire!". I have the same Vincent parts list/manual reprints, same vintage (1980s), 600 Dollars? The old T-Shirts and Sweatshirts? Old leather trousers? Old patches? Old advertizing posters? I think one could sweep that sort of leftovers together in any given bike shop that has been in operation for 2-3 decades, and the owner- like me- would tend to throw the crap away on clearing the premises. Now I have those leftover BMW spares.. and Ducati literature........ anybody out there prepared to give me hundreds or even thousands for them?

Hey everyone. I bought one! A BSA Goldstar. Lot 171. Now all I've got to do is figure out how to get it down to Paramount for under $600! I bought my Commando in Ohio and it was only a hundred dollars more to get it to California. I was hoping to get out of this for under $500. Considerably under! Am I dreaming? It's only got to go down the road. San Jose to L.A. Anyone know of a cheaper shipping company? :?

As the person who started this thread, let me be the first to say I am AMAZED at the prices realized at this sale. When you consider the prices posted do not include the 18% buyers fee but are only the hammer price and also do not include sales tax. Clearly, a million dollars would have not have been enough.

Thanks for bringing the auction to our attention.
About $10K (including fees) for a nice & original 850 MkIII isn't unexpected, is it? and $6.5K+ for a beautiful KTT Velocette seems like a bargain! but $21k for a less than pristine, or original, Ducati GT750!! I love bevel drive Ducatis, one of them was my main form of transport for 10 years, but I get the impression that, these days, they are collected far more than they are used. Nortons, on the other hand, seem to occupy a commendable middle ground; there's enough interest to stop people from letting them rust away in their back yards, but the bikes and parts still remain largely in the hands of riders rather collectors & speculators.

Cheers! ~ Gary

If it ain't cheap to pick up then this cheap bastard won't go there as the costs involved for fixup/restoration are substantial. Just keep ears to the railroad tracks and jump fast on opportunitys because someone else is on your heels sniffin' the winds. Mine are always word of mouth from friends to leads. No million in my bank account .
