Couldn't find any posts on point...does anyone have any experience with Eastern Beaver H4 Conversion kit and wiring using existing socket????

I haven't put one in my Commando yet but I did put one in my T120 and my lights are much brighter. It was very easy to install but with the connector for the headlight socket and the relays it was a bit tight in the T140 headlight shell I used. I took out the switch in the shell (which I never use with the 4 position ignition switch) and put one of those LED's which changes color with the change in charge in the switch hole. I guess you could put the relays somewhere else but I'm not sure you would have enough room for everything if you left the switch in the headlight.

Most late Commandos in Europe were fitted with H4 halogen units as standard. The shell is fairly crowded inside and especially with lower bars, there can be quite a lot of cable to tuck away but there are no real problems.

Hi I fitted a VW golf head light shell with a H4 bulb and just changed the soade conections It fitted my 1971 Commando no other mods needed. Waiting to try the new Osram High output Bulb But have to by them in pairs

If you throw a relay in , it hasnt got 5.000 volts going through the switch gear .

Best place is near battery , or on back off cross brace , Cable going direct to Ea Beam .
90 / 110 bulbs are available ( Hella ) for ' off road - rally use ' . Regulations on max
wattage once ! Definately need a relay if over say the 55 / 60 , and the low current at the contact points in the switchgear doesnt burnt the contacts / points .

Pansy Jap Wireing melts on big currents , some blokes mounted Cibie Super Oscars to the Crash Bars .
One of these with Dual Beam would require a larger headlight bucket , But wouldnt work too bad for night rideing .

H4 bulbs require a different reflector than the stock Commando. Most of these eliminate the parking light in the bottom.

Once you have done this it is a simple matter of purchasing a standard auto headlight connector and adding bullet connectors to the wires and replacing the original connector.

If you choose to use relays (highly recommended), then you can make your own using Bosch-type relays or purchase one of Eastern Beaver pre-assembled.

An H4 will draw more current, so if you have a stock charging system and run the headlight at all times it will probably not charge sufficiently. If you don't run the headlight in the daylight and/or you don't ride much in stop and go traffic you can probably get by. Adding a hi-output alternator and electronic regulator/rectifier will solve these problems.
