Drum brakes.

Thaks a lot for discussion. I did not mentioned that I am not building a racer..I have almost original 70's roadster with original drum brake. I only want to make better braking but with original looking (not disk brake). I found that the only way to have this commando looking brake is the individual produce on basic of some standatd 4LS brake. I found that in our country can do it some man who is making racing accesories for classic moto racing. But I would have to buy Grimeca 230 or similar (40 holes) and than he will cast and machine the commando looking plates. Original plates will remain me. But..a LOT of money and time to wait for it. So..I thing this is only a dream..

May I ask what the importance is of having a 40 hole wheel as opposed to a 36 hole?
If the reason is to keep originality then by fitting a doublesider that plan goes out the window.
I've been toying with the idea of making a single sided version of the 260mm TZ/Norton brake I do.
maybe I will do one and show you to get your opinion.
maybe my only concern will be , because of the large diameter, its those crosswinds that will cause most problems??

For a single sided 2LS which supposedly works better than the standard Commando, I have seen some Triumph pre-oil in frame backing plates mated to a Norton hub, The shoes have a larger swept area and the backing plate is it seems stiffer than the Commando one. I have all of the necessary components to try this modification, but haven't gotten round to it yet. The parts are fairly cheap if it works.

Madass140, you and I are the nearest Norton neighbours in Asia, which part of the Philippines do you live in?

If your goal is to improve braking with the standard 2LS I would first try the Norvil brake stiffening plate at $27.55 USD before spending $3K on a 4LS.

the stiffening plate is of no use on its own, yyou also need 2 new camshafts and one new brake pivot post to be riveted in place, all my Commando brakes come with the stiffening kit already fitted, I see the kits on ebay for a little under $200

Dave I'm in Cebu City, I'm probably the only Norton enthuisast in the country

madass140, there is guy I know with a Commando who lives in Angeles City, he was based in HK and in fact founded our classic bike club here. I was due to visit Dumagete next month for a literary event at Silliman University but unfortunately injured my shoulder and I am currently in the US hoping to be fit enough to get back home next week. If I have the opportunity of a visit in the future I could take a ferry over and say hello if this was convenient. I will e-mail you privately as this is going quite a bit off topic.

Regards

Dave
