Good luck certainly had a lot to do with it. I expected much more water damage in the internals, but evidently there was little oxygen present.

Hope your loss is getting somewhat easier to bear as time goes on.

Well, I guess that's one of the great things about these machines of ours.
They can be frustrating - but also offer a great distraction from other things going on.
I'm fairly certain we all need that at times...

I had a hare-brained brain-fart - others may find useful/homorous/pitiful?

I have been trying to figure a method of lowering the barrels - sufficient to get the base nuts on - but not so low as to mess up the sealing compound (wonderful Norton design feature).
I intend using Loctite 518 - good for cast iron/aluminium joints with no gasket.
I made two bamboo spacers from 5 X 20mm stock, one 39mm long the other 94mm long held to the barrel by a rubber band around the flange - they support the barrel by fitting below the bottom fin.
Anyway, a picture is worth a thousand words so here's four thousand...

You'll note they are close to the front/side stud - have to be to stop the barrel tipping forwards
