Just saw Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" documentary
All I can say is "Wow"!
All footage is from original National War archives. Beautifully restored/digitally enhanced to really bring it all to life. Voice overs from actual first persons recorded 50's-60's by BBC interviews.
My showing had an epilogue by Mr Jackson detailing how the movie was made. Things like how they used lip readers to recreate some of the voice overs in the footage. Even one case where they couldn't see the lips clearly to get a lip reading, yet were able to narrow down the command document the CO was reading to his troops by determine the regiment's identity and the date of the filming, then finding all known dispatches for them that day. They came up with a dispatch that when read aloud at various speeds, closely fit the facial movements of the CO.
Nothing out of Hollywood I have ever seen comes close to the reality this portrays.
