Hi:

Minor problem with my 1962 Norton Dominator 650SS.

The front footrests are secured onto a rod / spindle with threaded ends, (I believe part number 06.7637). On my bike a previous owner installed a non correct, fully threaded rod, presumably from his local hardware store. I decided it would be a good idea to replace with the correct, (and presumably much stronger) partially threaded rod. I purchased a rod (06.7637) from a reputable supplier, It measures 10 3/4", but for my bike it is too short, needs to be approx 3/4" longer! At least one other vendor's written specs state the correct length is 10 3/4". The footrests appear to be correct. Currently I'm a bit mystified regarding what I must be missing / do not understand?

Has anyone come across anything similar?

Thank you!

I found the rod that was originally in my Wideline Dominator and it measured 10 3/4”.

The other rod I have was supposed to be for a Slimline and measures a hair over 12 5/8”. I cannot remember if I bought it alone or if it came with a spare set of Slimline engine plates, oil tank/battery box mount, and hardware I picked up years ago.

Hope this helps.

The rod from my slimline 650SS is 277 mm long. Equals 10.9". Can't remember any problem with length when I took it apart. Though it seems not to be original. Odd (M10) thread.
Mine has a minor bend. Guess what happens when bike has dropped.

@Britstuff
If you need more confirmation of length, PM me. I will remove my spindle ('62 build Atlas original) and measure it.

Slick

Thank you to everyone for your help. I apologize for not thanking you all earlier. Unfortunately I'm a bit under the weather at the moment. As soon as I return the vertical I'm going to do some more measuring!

Been doing a bit more thinking and measuring regarding my spindle length problem. I remain somewhat mystified why the new rod is too short. However, I decided to purchase a partially threaded rod, (carbon steel) from the internet and cut it to size. The thread is 7/16 20, so finding a rod was not too difficult. Turns out the optimum length for me is around 11 1/4". I would have preferred if the threaded portion was a little shorter, but I think it is a lot better than what was installed by a previous owner.

Regarding the picture below:

The fully threaded rod on top is the one installed by a previous owner / the one I wanted to replace.

The one in the middle is part number 06.7637 (10 3/4" length). Too short!

The one at the bottom is the one I purchased online and shortened to 11 1/4" - just right!
