Hello,
on my P11 the prop stand bracket broke today. Good luck the bike didn't fall. Bad luck that it seems to be not that easy to remove the complete bracket cause I can't reach the second screw. Is it necessary to loose the engine or does anyone knows an easier way?

In my experience, you need to take the primary off. That top screw can't be removed with the inner primary in place.

Sorry...it's a bit of work.

Thank's Bill.
Do you have a part number for me?
Or maybe it's better to make one of solid steel instead of cast iron

06-7719A is the number for the assembly from Norvil. I don't think individual components are still available, and the pieces are a lot beefier than original, meaning you may have to do some grinding to clear the inner primary. I know mine needed a lot. it needs to look like the picture in your first post.

Unfortunately you need to remove the inner and outer primary drive case covers which, as you know, necessitates removal of the alternator parts, primary chain, clutch, etc. You don't need to remove the engine, however, still a big project.

I hear that you need to remove the motor mount bolt and jack up the motor also. Haven't tried it yet myself.

I didn't have to do that.

My bike was boxes of parts and a rolling chassis when I got it, with no stand. I looked for a sidestand for a year, and when finally found the Norvil item, I had completely assembled the bike.

The engine plate was marked up where sand had worked its way between the original side stand and plate, so figuring out where it goes was not a problem.

I removed the outer and inner primary, fit the inner clamp part up against the frame and engine plate, and tapped it in place with a rubber mallet.

are the side stand brackets known for breaking?

Yes. Mainly from starting the bike on the side stand.

Norton beefed up that part several times over its life and as a replacement part after the last Atlas or P11 was made, which is why the Norvil part has an 06-7719 number instead of 02- or 03-

it sounds like the only way to go, if missing, is a new one from Norvil. It doesn't quite look the same but at least it is not going to break.

I still would not try starting one with the side stand down. You need to remove a lot of material from the Norvil part so that when you are finished it probably isn't much, if any, stronger than the original.

Just to let you all know how this story ended.
I ordered Part No. 067909 at RGM Norton in the UK. Sent out 2days after order. Due to a strike at German Post the part arrived with a delay of 6 weeks.
When it arrived I decided to change only the broken front part of the bracket. It fitted right away. No drilling no grinding.
I decided to remove the pipes and the footrests and then all the bolts from the engine except the one at the rear.
Lift the engine with a Jack and change the broken part. It took me around 3 hours and a lot of curses to the engineers who built a bike like that.
But riding it is great fun.

Peter

Nice to see you guys helping each other out here...I guess that's one of the better uses of the internet.

I had to work all of this out on my own back in the day when Norton (before Dreer & Garner) was still in business. Even then P11's were the red headed step child.

Kudos to all of you guys that keep them running. My helmets off to you.

C-ya, Jer
